Malaysia's first C-level virtual reality networking was held in Sept 2022 when Digital News Asia hosted the first Digerati50 Omniverse Networking, with Jamaludin Ibrahim, QSR chairman as guest of honor. Expect to see more such immersive events once the CelcomDigi-SK Telecom metaverse platform is ready.

CelcomDigi Bhd and SK Telecom, South Korea’s leading wireless telecommunications operator, have sealed a MoU to explore and develop Malaysia’s first operator-led mobile metaverse platform.

In a joint statement, both firms said under the MoU, they will create new business opportunities by working together to develop and offer metaverse and artificial intelligence (AI) use cases optimised for the Malaysian market, via CelcomDigi’s Innovation Center.

They said, leveraging edge computing processes for best latency experience, the development of Malaysia’s first operator-led Mobile Metaverse Platform will also enable the co-creation and unlocking of new metaverse content and services for customers and businesses in Malaysia.

Additionally, both parties will explore creating metaverse services in various verticals such as education, health, retail, and entertainment, contributing to the development of Malaysia’s metaverse ecosystem.

Ryu Youngsang and Idham Nawawi.Commenting on the collaboration, Idham Nawawi (pic, right), CelcomDigi CEO, said the company is excited to collaborate with SK Telecom for the development of Malaysia’s metaverse ecosystem.

“This collaboration is part of our journey towards becoming the top telco-tech company in Malaysia and we aim to collaborate with more local organisations to co-create innovative use-cases that will spur growth within the nation’s digital economy,” Idham said.

Meanwhile, Ryu Youngsang (pic), CEO of SK Telecom said, as the company advances into the global market with its metaverse platform, major telecommunications companies in Southeast Asia and wider region play an important role as its partners.
