Victims of China floods race to salvage property

As authorities warned of additional heavy rains to come, victims of severe floods in southern China raced on Wednesday ( Apr 24 ) to save property from the murky waters.

In recent days, torrents have slammed Guangdong province, causing downpours that have claimed the lives of four persons and forced the evacuation of more than 100 000.

Yet in lovely, tropical Guangdong, the serious floods are almost unheard of but early in the year, according to a senior official who attributes them to worsening climate change.

On Wednesday, AFP writers in Qingyuan witnessed workers and representatives at a hotel taking advantage of a break from the weather to clear the streets of the city.

” The ocean has actually risen over the last few time”, said Liu Yongqi, 25, the general manager of a local hostel.

She told AFP,” We had only travel by small motorboat to the rest of the town for five days because the road was flooded.”

” Thankfully, we had much materials around anyway,” she said, noting that the recovery project had get” an additional two or three days.”
