Fresh pork back on sale in Singapore’s wet markets, but prices have gone up

On Tuesday, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Koh Poh Koon said that operations at the local abattoir have resumed with shipments of live pigs from Sarawak in Malaysia.

PASSING DOWN HIGHER COSTS TO CUSTOMERS

Pork sellers at Tiong Bahru Wet Market said they have had to pay about 30 per cent more for the new stock from Sarawak, and the higher costs will be passed down to customers.

Mr Sunny Lee, owner of a fresh pork stall at Tiong Bahru Wet Market, said: “Only they have the stock, and if they quote you a price and you don’t take it, there’s nowhere else for us to go. We have no choice.”

Some pork sellers said it could take at least four months before live pig imports from Indonesia resume.

But they added that the stock from Malaysia is only a temporary solution for them.

Jail terms for The Online Citizen’s Terry Xu and writer replaced with fines upon appeal

SINGAPORE: On Thursday, May 4, the chief writer of the other news site The Online Citizen and a poet for the system successfully appealed to experience their criminal defamation jail terms changed to fines. & nbsp,

Terry Xu Yuanchen, 40, received a fine of Mho$ 8, 000 instead of the initial three weeks in prison for defaming Singaporean Cabinet customers. & nbsp,

This was done in exchange for approving the September 2018 release of a letter alleging” problem at the highest echelons.”

Daniel De Costa Augustin, 39, the letter’s author, was given a fine of S$ 10,000 to change his three-week prison sentence.

He was sentenced to three months in prison for one count of having unapproved connection to an email account that was not his and was used to post the article, but he will still serve that sentence.

The couple also appealed their views, but Justice Aedit Abdullah overruled their request.

The three-week prison term for criminal defamation, according to Justice Abdullah, is” clearly unnecessary.”

He asserted that there was a difference in seriousness between claiming that members of the Cabinet were crooked and, through their stupidity, allowing corruption to harm Singapore’s creation or elite.

He claimed that the latter was the target of the slander in this instance and that it should be considered in the statement.

Mr. Chung Ting Fai, who represented De Costa, was successful in getting the statement postponed.

Xu did not show up in court. Mr. Remy Choo, his attorney, confirmed with CNA that Xu is in Taiwan. When a city court sentenced him in April 2022, he had already served three days in prison.

Justice Abdullah scheduled a second reading for Mr. Choo to speak with Xu to discuss whether he would prefer to have the occasion served used as the two weeks’ prison in default for the S$ 8, 000 good or not.

As office and shop rentals rise, storage space providers see brisk business. But for how long?

Over the past three years, as some businesses have scaled back to deal with huge accommodations for retail and office environments, demand for these hardware options has increased by a next.

However, because not all of them are the owners of the properties they are in, hardware companies themselves are now falling prey to rising rentals.

These storage companies are under increasing pressure to complete expenses down to customers.

Even as more spaces, like new warehouses, enter the market, recent weekly data indicates that industrial rents are always rising. & nbsp,

Some companies are hoping to benefit from economies of scale.

According to Ms. Rainie Han, assistant operation manager at EZ Storage,” some storage companies will increase the storage price( by ) up to 40 %.” & nbsp,

” For us, the hardware rate has remained the same, and in order to reduce other rates, we will consolidate and manage all of the personal items into a larger inventory.”

Flexible work arrangements a key focus of Singapore’s new workers compact: Labour chief Ng Chee Meng

“I think we are making good progress in the workers compact, but there will be some coordination needed as we finalise and consolidate the report. We want to share this with our tripartite partners, both the employers and very importantly, the government,” he said.

This ensures that workers’ voices are heard as Singapore’s fourth generation, or 4G, of political leadership forges a new social compact for the country.

FLEXIBLE WORK ARRANGEMENTS

Flexible work arrangements (FWAs) will be a focus in the new workers compact, as NTUC looks to better define the type of work and salaries to help specific groups such as caregivers.

He said the labour movement empathises with their needs, especially those of working mothers, noting that they face stresses from “the pressures of work, career and sometimes not just aged parents, but kids as well”.

“We think that flexible work arrangements, structured and flexible, in a more negotiable fashion with employers where both sides have a good understanding of what FWA means (and) how we can tailor needs, would be very helpful,” said Mr Ng.

Man at the centre of wife-sharing rape network pleads guilty

SINGAPORE: The main culprit in several wife-sharing rape cases carried out by men who met on an explicit online forum was sentenced to 29 years in jail and 24 strokes of the cane by the High Court on Thursday (May 4).

The 42-year-old Singaporean conspired with five other men to have his own wife drugged and raped over a period of eight years. He also conspired with two men to rape their wife or ex-wife.

The man, named only as J, is at the centre of the cases that the prosecution described as unprecedented.

He faced the most charges among the offenders, pleading guilty to six charges on Thursday. Another 11 charges were taken into consideration. He was previously represented by two different sets of lawyers, but dropped them and acted for himself.

All parties in the case cannot be named due to gag orders imposed by the court.

J, a safety officer, married his wife, now 41, in 2008. They have four children together. J asked his wife if she was interested in a threesome but was rebuffed, so he hatched a plan to sedate his wife for other men to have sex with her.

He met his accomplices as early as 2010, on the forum Sammyboy and other platforms for wife-sharing fantasies.

The case came to light when J’s wife woke up before her husband in January 2020 and noticed a video playing on his phone. She saw explicit images of herself in a Skype chat with accomplice K.

As she scrolled down, she discovered that the men had been exchanging their wives for sex. She slapped J awake and got him to take her to K’s home. The men were later arrested.

In mitigation, J said he was pleading guilty to take responsibility and accept his “due punishment”.

“Right now, my main concern is the safety of my wife as well as my children, so I would like to seek your honour’s consideration in putting me to go for legal assessment and diagnosis of what’s really going on in my mind,” he said.

He asked to receive treatment so that he could “be considered safe enough to be returned to my home, my family, as my family nucleus is still very much intact”.

J is currently receiving psychiatric attention and counselling in prison.

He claimed that his wife has forgiven him, but the prosecution rebutted this by reading from his wife’s victim impact statement, where she said: “I kept thinking about how cruel he was to do this to me.”

J also claimed that he committed the offences because his wife had affairs in 2010 and 2014.

He also tendered a letter from his mother, who asked the court to be lenient to her “filial” son who is a “responsible and loving good father” to his four daughters.

Four of the men involved – K, L, M and N – were sentenced in November, receiving jail terms of between 13-and-a-half years and 22 years. Three of them received 20 strokes of the cane, while the fourth did not as he was above 50.

The sixth man, P, was sentenced in January 2022.

The case for the last man, O, is pending.

‘Shocking betrayal of marital trust’: Main culprit in wife-sharing rape cases gets 29 years’ jail, caning

SINGAPORE: The High Court on Thursday( May 4) sentenced the primary offender in several wife-sharing rape cases & nbsp, carried out by men who met on an explicit online forum & nbpsp. He was given a 29-year prison sentence and 24 strokes of the cane.

The 42-year-old Singaporean plotted with five other men to have his own family raped and drugged over the course of eight years. Additionally, he plotted with two other men to violate their wife or ex-wife.

The judge described the man, who only goes by the name J, as” a shocking treachery of marital trust and severe physical perversion” at the center of the cases.

J faced & nbsp, the offender with the most charges, on Thursday, admitting guilt to five counts of conspiring to commit rape and one charge of sexual assault. There were 11 additional cost taken into account. He had formerly been represented by two different sets of attorneys, but he decided to represent himself instead.

Due to giggle purchases imposed by the court, all parties in the case may be named.

J, a health officer, wed his 41-year-old woman in 2008, and the two of them have four children up. J came up with a strategy to calm his wife so that other men could have sex with her after he asked her if she was interested in being in the threesome but was rejected.

On the forum Sammyboy and other sites for wife-sharing fantasies, he first met his six & nbsp, accomplices, in 2010.

In a string about wife-sharing on the Sammyboy on conference between 2009 and 2010, J got to know his partners Oxygen and K. & nbsp,

J’s woman confided in him that she wasn’t feeling clearly between 2010 and 2011. J pretended to give her medication while actually giving her a depressant, which made her lose consciousness.

The rest of the family was asleep when J persuaded O to go over to his place and assault J’s wife. While watching, J experienced” a mixture of sadness and rousing ,” according to the prosecution.

Following this incident, J plotted with many men to have them rape his wife in a similar way. Additionally, he planned to plunder the ex-wife and wife of two collaborators.

When J’s family woke up before her father in January 2020 and saw a game playing on his phone, the way was revealed. In a Skype conversation with her partner K, she saw expressed pictures of herself.

She scrolled down and saw that the soldiers had been having sex with their ladies. J was jolted awake by her, and she persuaded him to get her to K’s house. Later, the soldiers were taken into custody.

Imprisonment ELEMENTS

J was asked to serve a maximum of 24 wood strokes and between 28 and 32 years in prison by prosecution under the direction of deputy public prosecutor Gail Wong.

Ms. Wong claimed that there had been a” gross betrayal and abuse of trust ,” pointing out that J had intended to drug his own wife while pretending to be giving her medication before making plans to have his accomplices rape her.

J stated that he was pleading guilty in order to take responsibility and receive his” scheduled punishment” in moderation.

” Right now, my main concern is the safety of my wife and my children, so I would like to ask your honor’s consideration in putting me to go for legal assessment and diagnosis of what is really going on in my mind ,” he said.

He requested treatment so that he could” become considered reliable enough to be returned to my home, my life, as my femoral cell is still largely alive.”

J is reportedly receiving counseling and clinical care while incarcerated.

The trial refuted his claim that his wife had pardoned him by reading from her victim impact speech, which stated:” I kept thinking about how violent he was to do this to me.”

J added that his wife’s extramarital affairs in 2010 and 2014 were the reason he committed the crimes.

Additionally, he presented a letter from his mother pleading with the judge to be forgiving of her” filial” son, who is” responsible and loving good father” to his four sons.

According to the trial, the anxious psychiatrists concurred that J was neither mentally unstable nor incapable of restraint.

A murderer who claims to be addicted to female cannot or should have any mitigating weight given to him, according to Ms. Wong. This only indicates that he has a strong desire to engage in sexual activity.

She continued by saying that the reason he was depressed while incarcerated was his concern that his wife may file for divorce.

Justice See Kee Oon stated in his punishment that he did not agree that J’s behavior was somehow lessened by his alleged” abuse.”

Justice See said he could not deny how J’s reduction petition was overflowing with self-serving justifications and attempt to shift the blame to others, despite the fact that J claimed to be sorry and wanted to” atone for his sins.”

J claimed in the petition that the offenses were a form of retaliation for his wife’s alleged dishonesty.

The jury claimed that even though she did have matters, J already did. He continued,” Irrespective of any perceived score, the offenses did not justify them.”

He emphasized that none of the other co-accused were responsible for more than five offenses, whereas J was accountable for 17. J listened to the phrase while standing in the dock, looking dejected and wearing a mask over his nose.

In November, four of the men involved — K, L, M, and N — were given prison terms ranging from 13 to 15 years to 22 years. The wood was used 20 times on three of them, but the third did not because he was older than 50.

P, the fifth man, received his punishment in January 2022.

The case against O, the next guy, is still pending.

To avoid a Ukraine quagmire, study the Iraq War

Early in April 2023, Pentagon documents that were leaked revealed that the US is reportedly monitoring Russia’s intelligence operations and spying on Ukraine, giving its presence in the conflict in Ukraine a new dimension.

The documents reveal that the US continues to support Ukraine with military knowledge in addition to money and weapons against the Soviet invasion, even though it has never actually declared war on Russia.

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia and US presence have no clear end in sight. The US has participated in wars as a third party before, but this incident specifically brings to mind the Iraq War.

From the perspective of US foreign policy, the Iraq and Ukraine war differ significantly. In particular, thousands of American soldiers died fighting in Iraq, whereas the US has no ground forces there.

However, analyzing the Iraq War and its protracted aftermath can really aid in expressing worries about the United States” involved in extreme violence in another distant place.”

Below are three important things to know.

1. Success is not guaranteed by action.

Osama bin Laden, the rich Saudi Arabian Islamist who planned the attacks on September 11, 2001, was still at large when former US President George W. Bush declared the US had invade Iraq in 2003.

Although not directly related, bin Laden’s continued evasion of the US fueled a public resentment of hostile governments. Saddam Hussein in specific disobeyed the US and its supporters.

The Syrian authoritarian continued to avoid inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency, a UN watchdog organization, giving the impression that he was in possession of WMD. As the cat-and-mouse sport continued, this infuriated the US and its allies.

According to reports, Bush was very worried that Saddam would attack the US with alleged WMDs, causing more damage than 9 / 11 did.

Iraq was invaded in March 2003 by a coalition of nations led by the US that also included the United Kingdom and Australia. As it came to be known, the” coalition of the willing” quickly triumphed and overthrew Saddam’s government.

Immediately following the invasion, Bush experienced a rise in social guidance, but as the war dragged on, his polls began to decline.

However, the US demonstrated a poor idea of the politics, world, and other significant facets of its own country that it had taken the initiative to occupy and then attempt to recover.

The Syrian Army’s disbandment in May 2003 was one of many decisions that revealed poor judgment and sometimes outright knowledge. With the abrupt departure of Kurdish security forces, there was a severe civil unrest.

When the army was disbanded, rebellious violent soldiers emerged into the available. A civil war broke out in 2017 as a result of the fighting between various Kurdish groups getting worse.

Iraq is still politically unbalanced today and is no closer to becoming a republic than it was prior to the invasion.

2. 2. Specific grudges cannot support a war.

Saddam led an extravagant style during his 24-year rule, oppressing civilians and political rivals. In Iraq, he committed murder against Kurds. After being captured by US soldiers in 2006, Saddam was soon put to death by his own men.

Putin is even more serious and well-known. He has a lengthy history of violently oppressing his men, and he benefited from being in charge of one of the most corrupt governments in the world.

Additionally, he is in possession of weapons of mass destruction and has repeatedly threatened to use them against other nations. Additionally, US political leaders have directly targeted Saddam and Putin. It was clear well before the US entered the Iraq and Ukraine war that they were fixated on overthrowing these strange foes.

The United States’ support for Ukraine is natural given that it is engaged in a protective conflict that has resulted in horrifying civilian casualties. Supporting Ukraine also makes sense from the perspective of US regional security because it aids in retaliation against an interventionist Russia that is becoming more and more China-aligned.

However, I also think it’s crucial to keep US interest in this conflict within national interest.

3. It might split the nation.

The US’s serious politics over foreign policy increased as a result of the Iraq War. Additionally, current surveys of public opinion regarding the Iraq War reveal that the majority of Americans do not believe the war made the US any safer.

Today, the US is dealing with growing social reluctance to join the Ukraine battle, another costly overseas commitment.

According to surveys conducted in January 2023, more Americans believe the US is giving Ukraine too many aid in recent months. According to Pew Research Group, about 26 % of American adults believed that the US was over-investing in the Ukraine war in late 2022. However, the US employment was still supported by three-quarters of those polled.

The typical American has little to no knowledge of either Iraq or Ukraine. When US guidance for international wars increases in price and the threat of retaliation, especially through the use of tactical nuclear weapons, remains a chance, patience can probably run out.

Guide to Ukraine is probably going to get involved in the quickly intensifying conflict in Washington over the debt sky.

On the other hand, adversaries like Russia, China, and Iran might feel motivated to act aggressively elsewhere if the US does not provide Ukraine with enough support to fight off Russian attacks and restore its independence.

The relation between the war in Iraq and Ukraine, in my opinion, makes it abundantly clear that the US administration should be very clear about the fundamental objectives of its national security to the American people when deciding how much and what kind of support it will provide to Ukraine.

Although most people think that Ukraine should be supported in its fight against Russian aggression, the Iraq War serves as a warning that original plan should not disregard the past.
