Six million children in Southeast Asia affected by Yagi disaster: UNICEF

Bangkok: Nearly six million children have been impacted by deadly floods and landslides caused by Typhoon Yagi in Southeast Asia, according to the UN on Wednesday ( Sep 18 ), as the death toll rises.

Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar were affected by Typhoon Yagi’s strong winds and torrential rain about two weeks ago when it swept the area.

On Wednesday, Thailand reported three more mortality, raising the kingdom’s death toll to 18, with 537 total deaths then confirmed in the area.

Six million babies have been affected by Yagi, United Nations children’s company UNICEF said in a speech, with access to clean water, training, care, food and shelter all compromised.

According to June Kunugi, UNICEF local chairman for East Asia and Pacific,” the most afflicted children and families are facing the most destructive effects of the damage left behind by Typhoon Yagi.”

About three million people in Vietnam are at risk of developing condition because there are no safe drinking water and sanitation, according to UNICEF.

A community in Myanmar has been suffering from more than three years of conflict between the defense and armed parties opposed to its rule, with about 400, 000 people being forced from their houses by the storms, which have caused the country’s population to suffer.
