In response to a student protest at the National University of Singapore on Thursday ( Jan 16 ), Singapore’s police announced that they were looking into the incident. The protest called for universities to end their cooperation with Israeli institutions in the wake of the Israel-Hamas conflict.
In a press release, 124 students and alumni “mourn and honor” Arab individuals who lost their lives in the war and placed 124 pairs of shoes and a light burial cover in front of the CREATE study building in NUS.
The organization calls itself Kids For Palestine Singapore and describes itself on its social media page as a student-led motion calling for Israel to end its educational, economic, and political relations.
The authorities confirmed that a document was  , lodged and investigations are ongoing.
The authorities would like to inform the people that holding public events in Singapore without a authorities permit is against the Public Order Act 2009, and that holding public events there is illegal.
” The police won’t grant any permits to gatherings that support social causes in other nations or unusual organizations” or” that may have the power to upend public order.”
The opposition organizers claimed they chose the CREATE study building because it supports the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, which they claimed “vocally and materially supports the murder in Gaza.”
Citing numerous other Singapore-Israel educational partnerships, the organisers called on institutions in Singapore to close collaborations with Jewish universities.  ,
Additionally, the group urged universities to prevent “police surveillance and coercion” of student activists and to cease all monetary investments made with companies connected to the Israeli military.
An NUS spokeswoman said on Thursday in response to CNA’s inquiries that” this is an illegal action on our school house and a police statement has been made.”
