- Largest gaming exhibition in Asia, avenue for M’sian companies to promote digital content
Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) has successfully led the participation of ten Malaysian gaming and creative content companies at the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2022, held from Sept 15 to Sept 18.
In a statement, the agency said TGS is the largest gaming exhibitions in Asia and an avenue for Malaysian companies to promote digital content and showcase their expertise in various segments of the game industry.
This includes new technology, 2D/3D & computer graphic animation and assets, as well as Intellectual Property, it said.
Re-opened to the public after two years of hiatus, more than 138 thousand visitors visited TGS during the four day-event. Additionally, more than 600 exhibitors from Japan and internationally took part in the show, Matrade said.
Throughout the event, Matrade said it arranged a series of business meetings and networking sessions for Malaysian exhibitors which it claimed resulted in total export sales of US$26.8 million (RM124.67 million), primarily for new games and titles publishing as well as co-development.
In 2020, Malaysia’s total export of content and media products was US$1.4 billion (RM6.65 billion), or 2.1% share of total ICT export, it added.
Overall, Malaysia’s ICT contributed 22.6% to total gross domestic product (GDP) in 2020, the agency said.
Niqman Rafaee Mohd Sahar, Trade Commissioner of Matrade Tokyo, said the Japanese industry players were impressed with Malaysian capabilities.
“The products and services that received serious inquiries were games co-development, assets and cinematics, localisation and outsourcing services, 2D/3D/CG animation for modelling and game publishing.
“Japan ranked third largest market globally for the gaming industry after China and USA with a market size of US$22.1 billion (RM1 trillion).
“The pandemic has accelerated the digitalisation agenda globally, including in Japan, however with the rise of 5G network services in the country, demand for games, especially mobile games is rising further,” said Niqman.
