Man charged with selling illegal streaming devices at Sim Lim Square, infringing copyright of Disney, Netflix

A man who owned two Sim Lim Square businesses was charged in court on Tuesday ( Mar 26 ) with installing computer programs that would enable customers to watch pirated content.

Ge Xin, a 36- year- ancient Singaporean, was charged along with the two businesses- MT Gadget and Grandnew.

By selling products with programs that allowed viewers to get copyrighted shows like Raya and the Last Dragon, The Adam Project, and Premier League games, he allegedly violated the copyrights of firms like Disney, Netflix, and the Football Association Premier League.

Ge is also accused of copying the rights to various functions, including Best Gun Maverick by Paramount Pictures, Discovery Channel by Discovery, and Fantastic Beasts: The Mysteries of Dumbledore by Warner Bros.

More than 400 illegitimate streaming services were seized from Ge’s two locations in parallel raids, according to a statement from the police, which were carried out by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department on October 4, 2022.

Since the passage of a law banning the sale of rogue set-top boxes in September 2021, the assault was the first widely known crackdown on illegal streaming devices.
