Malaysia to ask Meta to explain removal of Facebook posts on PM’s Hamas meeting

Malaysia’s government announced on Wednesday ( May 15 ) that it will contact Meta Platforms to explain the removal of Facebook posts in response to media reports of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s public meeting with a Hamas leader.

Anwar met with Hamas ‘ Ali Haniyeh on Tuesday in Qatar and claimed to have had good relationships with the country’s political leaders but had not been a part of the country’s military.

Malaysia, which is a Muslim-majority country, has long backed the Palestinian cause and pushed for a two-state alternative to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

According to government spokesman and communications secretary Fahmi Fadzil, Malaysia’s communications regulation had received complaints about the removal of Facebook messages.

Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Malaysia’s problems.

Fahmi warned in October that if Meta and TikTok were preventing pro-Palestine information from being posted on their platforms, immediate action could be taken.
