Gaza: AI changing speed, scale and harm of modern war - Asia Times

Researchers have rated Israel’s air campaign in Gaza as one of the most relentless and deadly efforts in recent history as it enters its seventh month following Hamas ‘ terrorist attacks on October 7. It is also one of the first being coordinated, in piece, by systems.

Artificial intelligence ( AI ) is being used to assist with everything from identifying and putting targets into priority to choosing weapons to use against them.

Academic critics have long been focusing on how systems can be used in battle to increase the speed and scope of combat. However, as recent research has revealed, systems are now being used extensively in thickly populated urban areas.

The US is testing techniques to use Project Maven to target potential terrorists in both the wars in Gaza and Ukraine and in Yemen, Iraq, and Syria.

It is crucial to consider what the actual purpose of AI in battle is in the context of this motion. Not from the view of those in authority, but from those officers carrying out it and those civilians who are suffering from its harsh effects in Gaza, it is crucial to do so.

This emphasis emphasizes the limitations of keeping a man in the loop as a safe and essential reply to the use of AI in combat. As AI- enabled targeting becomes progressively automated, the speed of targeting accelerates, people monitoring diminishes and the scale of human harm increases.

Frequency of targeting

Studies by Jewish papers 927 Magazine and Local Call give us a glimpse into the experience of 13 Israeli leaders working with three Artificial- enabled decision- making techniques in Gaza called” Gospel”,” Lavender” and” Where’s Daddy”?.

These devices apparently have been trained to recognize characteristics that are thought to describe those working for Hamas ‘ military shoulder. These features include using the same WhatsApp group as a suspected militant, switching mobile devices often, or changing addresses regularly.

The techniques are next allegedly charged with analyzing data that was gathered through widespread security on Gaza’s 2.3 million people. The systems calculate the likelihood that a person is a Hamas ( Lavender ), that a building has a person in their home ( Where’s Daddy ), or that such a person has entered their home based on the predetermined features. ).

In the analytical reports named above, intelligence officers explained how Gospel helped them get “from 50 targets per time” to” 100 targets in one day” – and that, at its optimum, Lavender managed to “generate 37, 000 people as possible animal targets”. They also discussed how using AI shortens the amount of time spent deliberating:” I would invest 20 seconds for each target at this stage… I had zero added value as a human… it saved a lot of time.”

In light of a manual check the Israel Defense Forces ( IDF) conducted on a sample of several hundred targets produced by Lavender in the first weeks of the Gaza conflict, through which a 90 % accuracy rate was reportedly established, they justified this lack of human oversight.

Although details of this manual check are likely to remain classified, a 10 % error in the system’s decision-making process will inherently lead to devastation-devastating realities.

Importantly, any accuracy rate that sounds reasonably high makes it more likely that algorithmic targeting will be used because it delegates trust to the AI system. As one IDF officer told 927 magazine:” Because of the scope and magnitude, the protocol was that even if you do n’t know for sure that the machine is right, you know that statistically it’s fine. So you go for it”.

In a statement to The Guardian, the IDF denied these claims. Although the IDF does use “information management tools ] ] to help intelligence analysts gather and optimally analyze the intelligence, obtained from a variety of sources, it does not employ an AI system that identifies terrorist operatives,” according to a spokesperson.

However, The Guardian has since released a video of a senior Israeli intelligence Unit 8200 talking last year about the use of machine learning “magic powder” to aid in the identification of Hamas targets in Gaza.

The commander of the same unit claimed in a 2021 under a pseudonym that such AI technologies would “relieve the human bottleneck for both locating the new targets and decision-making to approve the targets” ( source: The newspaper ).

Scale of civilian harm

AI increases the number of targets produced and the amount of time it takes to decide on them faster than AI.

Due to the value we typically assign to computer-based systems and their outcome, these systems inherently lower the ability of humans to determine the validity of computer-generated targets. However, they also make these decisions appear more objective and statistically correct.

This allows for the further normalization of machine- directed killing, amounting to more violence, not less.

While body counts, similar to computer-generated targets, are frequently presented in media reports as objects that can be counted. This reinforces a very stereotypical image of war.

It glosses over the reality of more than 34, 000 people dead, 766, 000 injured and the destruction of or damage to 60 % of Gaza’s buildings and the displaced persons, the lack of access to electricity, food, water and medicine.

It neglects to highlight the horrifying tales of how these things frequently compound with one another. One civilian, Shorouk al-Rantisi, reportedly found under the rubble after an airstrike on a refugee camp in Jabalia, had to wait 12 days before receiving an operation without painkillers, and now resides in another refugee camp without access to running water to treat her wounds.

Aside from accelerating the pace of targeting and thus accelerating the predictable patterns of civilian harm in urban warfare, algorithmic warfare is likely to compound harm in novel and under-researched ways. First, civilians frequently change addresses or give their phones to loved ones as they flee their destroyed homes.

According to the reports on Lavender, this survival behavior is in line with what the AI system has been programmed to identify as likely connection to Hamas. These civilians, thereby unknowingly, make themselves suspect for lethal targeting.

Beyond targeting, these AI- enabled systems also inform additional forms of violence. The alleged torture and arrest of and at a military checkpoint is an illustrative example of the poet who is escaping.

The IDF’s use of AI facial recognition and Google photos ultimately led to the publication The New York Times reporting that he and hundreds of other Palestinians were mistakenly identified as Hamas.

Over and beyond the deaths, injuries and destruction, these are the compounding effects of algorithmic warfare. People are kept under constant surveillance, but they do not know which behavioural or physical “features” will be acted on by the machine. This becomes a psychic imprisonment.

It is clear from our analysis of the use of AI in warfare that our focus should not solely be on the technical prowess of AI systems or the role of the human-in-the-loop as a failsafe.

We must also take into account these systems ‘ ability to change how human-machine-human interactions are conducted, where those who engage in algorithmic violence are merely rubber stamping the AI system’s output and those who engage in dehumanization in unprecedented ways.
