From sewage systems to cable tunnels: Police use robotics to ensure safety at major events

SINGAPORE: Through patting down pillow cases in hotel rooms to peering inside pumps out, officers from the Law enforcement Security Command (SecCom) step in before a major event and carry out search operations upon venues.

Their task is straightforward: Look for forceful devices and other protection threats that might risk VIPs, guests plus participants.

These types of search operations are already enhanced with the use of robotics since 2019, mentioned the Singapore Police (SPF) and House Team Science plus Technology Agency (HTX) on Sunday (Jul 24).

“One of our primary duties is to carry out search operations from major security events to ensure that there are simply no explosive devices or even security threat items that will endanger VIPs, guests and individuals. However , search operations can be dangerous plus physically demanding, ” stated the Commanding Officer of Search Battalion Unit from SecCom, Deputy Superintendent associated with Police Winston Yim.

This is where unmanned aerial vehicles plus remote-controlled vehicles come in, to “improve function efficiency while making sure officers’ safety”, stated SPF and HTX.

The deployment of these programs have enabled SecCom to more than halve the amount of time plus manpower spent on lookup operations, as compared to actual searches done simply by officers, SPF informed CNA.

“This also depends on additional contributing factors that can affect the operation, such as the environment, operating landscape and the complexity from the search. ”
