Commentary: Is Japan ready to reopen its borders?

While cumulative mortality per capita has been higher in Japan in January than in most of its created East Asian neighbours in 2020 to 2021, Japan right now has the lowest passing away rate per capita outside of China.

As of Jul 9, Japan offers experienced 249 cumulative deaths per mil compared with 262 within Singapore, 314 in New Zealand, 317 in Taiwan, 400 in Australia and 480 in South Korea.

The raise of cases within Japan has brought the government to take preventive measures to bolster local government efforts to secure enough hospital bed frames. It will also re-evaluate the beginning of the Zenkoku Ryokou Shien program, which may have encouraged inner tourism through government subsidies.

Even though Japan was sluggish to roll out the booster shot within January, vaccine data show that since Jul 8, sixty four per cent of the human population had received the booster shot when compared with 38 per cent in the United States, 54 per cent nationwide, 59 per cent in britain, 74 per cent in Taiwan, 74 % in South Korea and 78 per cent in Singapore.
