Commentary: Don’t let Singapore’s record low workplace fatality rate be a ‘one-hit wonder’

Singapore’s office fatality rate has suddenly decreased following a challenging period in 2022, when the government implemented additional measures to encourage businesses to prioritize safety.

At 0.99 murders per 100, 000 staff in 2023, Singapore’s work mortality rate is now among the lowest in the world. Thirty- six personnel died in 2023.

Every living lost is one too many, but 2023’s range marks a major improvement from the 46 incidents, or 1.3 deaths per 100, 000 workers, in 2022.

However, as Senior Minister of State Zaqy Mohamad for Manpower stated in March,” What is important is to preserve this.”

” After you get it, you do not want to be called a one- reach question. You hope to remain Taylor Swift with 20 years of success”, he said in Parliament.

( In case you’re wondering about the Taylor Swift rant, much of Singapore was sucked into Taylormania in March as a result of the pop star’s Eras Tour performance. )

THE IMPORTANCE OF SPEAKING UP

In Singapore’s 20 years since the accident on April 20, 2004, where four employees died, safety and health standards have drastically changed. Three other employees were injured, and one person was not found. That time, 83 staff were killed, resulting in a workplace accident frequency of 4.9 per 100, 000 employees.

Since therefore, the office catastrophic damage frequency has fallen about 80 per cent. It is proper to think about how Singapore may reduce workplace deaths over the next 20 times and beyond as World Day for Safety and Health at Work reaches on April 28.
