49 Malaysian immigration officers arrested for allegedly helping syndicate smuggle foreign workers through KLIA

The three operations saw MACC making seizures of over RM1 million ( US$ 234, 000 ) in cash, along with vehicles, jewellery and gold, Free Malaysia Today reported.

A full of 215 bank transactions have been frozen, with a total of more than RM3 million, according to Mr. Azam, who was contacted by the media website. These addresses belong to the immigration officials working for the consortium.

NST reported that the anti-graft company had on Aug 21 dismantled a gang accountable for contraband foreign nationals from Myanmar, Bangladesh, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, and Nepal into Malaysia through illegal access points.

Mr. Azam claimed on Wednesday that the money given to the questioned immigration officials had codenames based on the countries of the foreigners being detained.

The money would vary depending on the foreigners ‘ countries.

” The soldiers were bribed with between RM200 and RM2, 500 for each foreigner”, Mr Azam said, according to The Star.

The syndicate’s strategy includes coordination between the agencies and immigration officials via WhatsApp, where they will find a suitable time for the immigrants to provide Malaysia along with their information.

The agents will take these foreigners to their intended destinations, according to Mr. Azam, adding that the officers will provide the amount for the particular counter to be used by the immigrants for simple access into the country.

Mr. Azam made the suggestion at the press event on Wednesday that the two KLIA terminals should be able to avoid a gang from reoccurring, according to Malay Mail.

He also suggested that a separate group handle the assignments for the officers assigned at the counters until after they have been called in for work and are already in the desk zone.

Asia left to wonder what’s spooking the Fed – Asia Times

With the support of international investors, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell must feel relieved. Businesses took his bigger-than-expected 50 basis-point easing walk very much in foot.

Had his group been less confrontational, easing only 0.25 percentage points, the speculation about the next move may have started quickly.

Here in Asia, though, economists ca n’t help but wonder what Fed officials know that global markets do n’t. The Fed’s downshift to a range of 4.75 %-5 %, after all, was of a magnitude usually reserved for a recession or crisis.

” This’ deluxe’ cut marks a move towards populist economic plan by the Fed”, says economist David Roche, chairman of Global Strategy. ” It was wanted by the industry, where, of course, the pain threshold is zero. It was dictated by the internet. But it is not needed by the]US] market, which is well-balanced”.

Roche magic, however, “is the judgement especially wise because it places far too much attention on the Fed’s career goals over prices goals.” It raises questions about what the Fed has in common with the labor market that we do n’t. And it suggests that the Fed maintains the US economy’s vitality by keeping the parity level of interest rates below the desired level.

Mark Zandi, chief analyst at Moody’s Analytics, notes that Wednesday’s reduce “feels extremely intense, unless you know the market is going to begin to diminish more substantially”.

Economist Ryan Sweet at Oxford Economics magic if the Fed is admitting, successfully, it should’ve eased sooner.

He claims that” the Fed” does n’t like to acknowledge policy errors, but some of the decision to make a bigger cut in September is likely to fall flat because the central bank found itself behind the curve at one meeting. Thus, the decision from September is a “preemptive strike” to improve the likelihood that the central bank will be able to make a smooth landing.

The Fed’s prices calculus will cause a lot of financial reports to surface in Asia. As Powell’s team admitted in its post-easing statement, inflation remains” somewhat elevated” above the Fed’s 2 % comfort zone ( the Consumer Price Index ( CPI ) rose at a 2.5 % annualized rate in July ).

If one of the Fed’s 12 voting members did n’t disagree, the Fed’s claim that “risks to achieving its employment and inflation goals are roughly in balance” might have more weight.

Fed committee member Michelle Bowman wanted a quarter-point split. The Fed governor’s first dissention since 2005 highlights the disinterestedness of Team Powell’s decision to go 50 basis points while ensuring worldwide markets that everything is alright at home.

In Asia, focus then turns to Tokyo. On Thursday, the Bank of Japan began a two-day plan meeting. In late July, it hiked rates to the highest since 2008 — 0.25 %. The BOJ is expected to keep rates unchanged this week as financial data suggest slow economic growth is on the horizon.

The sport is parsing the BOJ’s vocabulary for any suggestions of further tightening techniques later this month, according to economists. The yen could rocket skyrocket if the smallest taste of another touching of the brakes is present.

The currency’s almost 6 % jump since July 31 is fueling real paranoia in Eastern markets. Symptoms that BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda may increase rates once more this year could lead to another loosening of the “yen-carry trade,” causing asset markets to collapse everyday.

Twenty-five times of holding costs at zero turned Japan into the world’s major bank state. For decades, funding resources &nbsp, borrowed cheaply&nbsp, in yen to bet on higher-yielding resources around the globe.

As such, immediate japanese moves slam markets almost anywhere. It became one of the nation’s most packed trades, one truly prone to correction.

The path of Fed plan is an extremely important varying as China’s market, Asia’s biggest, slows. &nbsp, That’s especially so with an obvious gap opening up at Fed office.

” My guess is they’re split”, past Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan tells CNBC. Some people around the table have the impression that they’re a little later, that they want to start strong, and that they would choose not to spend the slide chasing the business. There’ll be another that, from a threat management point of view, just want to be more careful”.

There’s a chance, nevertheless, that the Powell Fed is putting magnification over reasonable economic policy.

According to Seema Shah, chief world strategist at Principal Asset Management,” for the Fed,” it comes down to deciding whether to reinvigorate inflation pressures by cutting by 50 basis points or by threatening a recession by cutting by only 25 basis points. Having now been criticized for responding to the inflation issue very slowly, the Fed will likely be afraid of being reactive, more than strategic, to the risk of slowdown”.

However, the Powell Fed has skepticism abounds as a result of its past behavior of bowing to political factors.

Powell was chosen to lead the Fed, according to former US President Donald Trump. But, Powell soon found himself in the midst of a flurry of Trump requests that the Fed reverse its policy of easing. Trump also mulled firing Powell, an exceptional risk to the Fed’s freedom.

In 2019, the Powell Fed began cutting rates, pumping fresh liquidity into an economy that did n’t need it. That left the US even more prone to post-Covid-era prices.

The Powell Fed erred again in 2021, arguing that inflation was” transitory” as it delayed rate hikes. The most intense Fed tightening period since the mid-1990s was caused by the need to play catch up with the fighting rising prices in 2022.

The US federal debt topped US$ 35 trillion in the time, and Washington’s social unrest is raising concerns about government funding. In preparation for the November 5 vote, the Fed’s hinge is undoubtedly advantageous.

However, events at the Fed rates may affect the plan outlook. Marshall comes from a neighborhood banking history, according to Brad DeLong, an economical scholar at the University of California at Berkeley. As for, the opposition “deserves a raised eye” as Team Powell went great Wednesday.

” Since 1993 there have been just six dissents from the chairman’s place by the six different Fed Governors, compared to 71 from the rotating five voting Fed bank president”, Long information. The convention advises that governors vote with the chair to prevent the possibility that a bank president who is legally a private banker casts a vote that affects what has come to be the core policy of the government.

What’s more, DeLong points out,” there has been only one hawkish Governor dissent – until now. Governors only “in extremis” when they believe the committee’s main concern is n’t taking employment risks seriously enough, according to the convention.

That’s why Governor Bowman, a Trump appointee, is “distinctly odd”, DeLong says. ” Those holding small-scale community-banker seats on the Board of Governors are rarely the interest-rate hawk fringe outliers on the FOMC. Repayment risk is a result of community bankers ‘ real-world experience, which means that their institution’s typical portfolio suffers greatly in a recession. And I certainly did not see her as the inflation-hawk fringe of the FOMC”.

Asian policymakers are left to wonder what the Powell Fed is seeing instead of what they are. ” Despite surveys showing that the consensus is expecting a soft landing, rates markets are pricing in a full-blown recession”, says Torsten Slok, chief economist at Apollo Global Management.

The Bank of Indonesia’s surprise rate cut this week served as a reminder of how Asian economies are in charge of Fed policymaking.

The seven-day reverse repurchase rate was cut by 25 basis points to 6 % on Wednesday during Asia time, the first easing change since early 2021, even before the BI was aware of what the Fed might do.

The Federal Funds Rate direction is becoming clearer, and the rupiah is becoming comparatively stable and even stronger, according to BI Governor Perry Warjiyo.

The question is whether the Association of Southeast Asian Nations ( ASEAN ) economies can expect similar trends in global markets. ” This will increase the attraction of ASEAN”, Nirgunan Tiruchelvam, an analyst at Aletheia Capital, tells Bloomberg. In this rate-cutting environment, Indonesia in particular and ASEAN in general stand out. Due to high dividends, consumer resurgence, and high commodity prices, the area is a haven. In the 2007 and 2009 rate cuts, ASEAN was an outperformer among emerging market regions”.

For traders in the best financial centers around the world to determine where the Fed is headed will take some time. The hope, of course, is that talk of a US soft landing bears out.

The higher prints at the start of the year increasingly appear to be residual seasonality rather than reacceleration, according to Goldman Sachs economists in a note. A shift in the focus on labor market risks will therefore be a key theme of the meeting.

Asks Jason Draho, head of asset allocation at UBS Financial Services:” When will investors think the&nbsp, Fed&nbsp, is ahead of the curve and proactively exercising its’ put’? Because investors have been implicitly asking that question and hoping for this outcome all summer long, this is the most crucial question.

Before Asia is aware of the Fed’s rate-lowering intentions, it will undoubtedly take some time. However, policymakers are anxious and gearing up for bolder moves as a result of the Fed’s assertive cut this week.

Excessive social media use linked to mental health symptoms among youths: IMH study

KEY Studies

According to the findings of the study, worry was the most prevalent mental health issue among young people in Singapore, with about 27 % of young people reporting having severe or really intense symptoms in the week leading up to the study. &nbsp,

Most of the symptoms of anxiety include feeling anxious, tense, and anxious. &nbsp,

About 1 in 7 students described experiencing serious or really intense depressive symptoms, including feeling depressed, feeling bare, and lacking in motivation to participate in activities most of the time.

12.9 % of Singaporean students reported experiencing serious to very significant levels of stress. This results in being unable to unwind, feel unhappy, or get angry frequently. &nbsp,

About 27 per cent of students were also found to employ social media unnecessarily.

Those who did but were 1.5, 1.3 and 1.6 times more likely to have had serious or really intense symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress, both, said IMH and NHG. &nbsp,

Younger people with moderate to intense body image issues were 4.9, 4.3, and 4.5 times more likely to have experienced severe or really intense symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress, both. &nbsp,

Victims of bullying were roughly twice as likely to exhibit these mental health issues. &nbsp,

Being in such state for a prolonged period of time may be harmful to their well-being, according to Associate Professor Swapna Verma, president of the medical board at IMH. &nbsp,

She said that today’s younger people are dealing with unique challenges that were left unresolved by the previous generation.

” Social internet exposes them to regular similarities, intensifying concerns about body image. The anonymity of the online world has even given rise to bullying, which adds a new dimension of abuse that can be continuous and far-reaching” .&nbsp,

Associate Professor Mythily Subramaniam, assistant chairman of the medical board ( research ) at IMH, said the three associated factors could be linked to each other. &nbsp,

” The amount of time young folks spend on social media may also be related to abuse, and the two may lead to body shape issues either separately or up,” he said. &nbsp,

Our review, like many others, demonstrates that excessive social media use has a significant impact on youth mental health and is a public health issue. &nbsp,

” It is important that young individuals, families, educators pay attention to these issues, accept signs of distress first and build healthy boundaries. ” &nbsp,

Japanese school student dies after stabbing in China

One morning after being stabbed, a 10-year-old student at a Chinese class in southeastern China passed away.

The child, who was enrolled at the Shenzhen Japanese School, succumbed to his injury early on Thursday, Chinese officials said.

His aggressor, a 44-year-old male surnamed Zhong, was arrested on the spot, local authorities said.

Tokyo asked Beijing for an reason” as soon as possible,” according to Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, who described the incident as “despicable.”

While neither part has confirmed the victim’s ethnicity, the Shenzhen Japanese School’s site says it is for” Chinese youngsters who have Chinese nationality”.

The attack’s motivations were unknown at the time.

It occurred on the eve of the famous Mukden Incident, which Japan fabricated to support its 1931 invasion of Manchuria, triggering a 14-year conflict with China.

” This should never occur in any state”, Kimikawa said.

Following a similar blade attack in June, when a Chinese mother and her child were attacked in Suzhou, northeast China, the stabbing occurred in Shenzhen.

On Thursday, the Chinese embassy in Beijing issued a statement to the Chinese authorities to “prevent such incidents from happening afterwards.”

At a news conference on Wednesday, Taiwanese foreign ministry official Lin Jian said the case was being investigated.

China will continue to get effective steps to ensure the health of all foreign nationals, he added.

Ties between China and Japan have long been bitter- for decades the two countries have been at odds with one another on a variety of issues, from regional disputes to traditional grievances.

Some observers worry that growing patriotic views in China could lead to more domestic violence against immigrants.

The knife attack in Suzhou in June was also near a Japanese school and led to the death of a Chinese national who had tried to protect a Japanese mother and her child. Earlier that month, four American teachers were stabbed in the northern city of Jilin.

China described both as “isolated occurrences”.

A former Chinese minister said Wednesday’s assault in Shenzhen was the “result of longer years of anti-Japan schooling” in Foreign schools.

” This has cost the beautiful life of a Chinese child”, Shingo Yamagami, Japan’s past ambassador to Australia, wrote on X.

In response to the stabbing in Shenzhen, some Chinese schools in China have contacted kids.

Some activities were canceled by the Guangzhou Japanese School, and Chinese speakers were cautioned against speaking Chinese loudly in public.

Earlier this year, the Japanese government requested about$ 2.5m ( £1.9m ) to hire security guards for school buses in China.

One person wrote on Taiwanese social media that “violence is no patriotism.”

This weekend, Bangkok will host Car Free Time on Banthat Thong Road, giving visitors a safe place to go for fun in different activities.

The event,” Bangkok Car Free 2024: Connecting for Life”, coincides with the annual World Car Free Day on Sept 22, according to Bangkok Metropolitan Administration ( BMA ) spokesman Aekvarunyoo Amrapala.

Bangkok government Chadchart Sittipunt and his team will go live on Facebook on Friday to discuss the development of a transportation initiative that aims to expand the city’s options for transportation.

The initiative supports the promotion of public transport over personal transportation in the” First Mile-Last Mile” campaign.

The Bangkok holiday center’s Pathum Wan region may participate in the event by piloting a pedestrianization plan that will see the road from Soi Chula 12 to 20 closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Local retailers may remain available, while outside suppliers will not be permitted. There will also be actions, such as city performances and charcoal painting.

If input is good, the BMA may consider turning Banthat Thong into a walking city in the future, said the official. Vehicle traffic may be prohibited at the spot from 4pm to evening.

Palworld: Nintendo sues ‘Pokémon with guns’

The Pokémon Company, the developer of the popular life journey game Palworld, and Nintendo and its partner, have filed a lawsuit against the company for allegedly violating a patent.

When its first video was unveiled in 2021, Palworld quickly gained the name” Pokémon with weapons.”

The Pokémon Company announced it would check the ripoff claims just days after the show’s January release.

Palworld’s designer, Pocketpair Inc, did not immediately reply to a BBC News request for comment. Pocketpair’s boss recently said the sport had passed constitutional checks.

In claims posted on their sites, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company claimed Palworld “infringes many invention rights.”

This petition seeks compensation for damages and an order against infringement.

Palworld has become a major hit, with more than 25 million players within a month of its release.

It even centers on acquiring strange creatures with various powers, much like the well-known company of Pokémon video games.

Pocketpair’s site describes the sport as easily integrating “elements of fight, monster-capturing, coaching, and base building”.

People, known as “pal-tamers”, travel around a large image fighting man foes and species known as “pals” which can be captured and recruited.

The demons can sometimes fight alongside the player in battles or get employed as base workers, with supplies and equipment for field use.

In January, The Pokémon Company said it planned to investigate claims that Palworld had copied its games, after fans pointed out similarities.

The Pokémon Company stated at the time that if it learned that its trademark had been violated, it may take appropriate action.

2 tourists from China die after tree falls on car at Penang attraction

On Wednesday ( Sep. 18 ), two Chinese tourists died after a tree fell on the car they were driving at a nearby attraction in Penang.

The two, who are both father and daughter, were only recently finished their two-day visit to the Pinang Peranakan Mansion in George Town, according to local press, at around 2.15pm.

The woman was seated in the front passenger seat, while the man was seated in the back, according to Free Malaysia Today ( FMT ). A local gentleman managed to elude the car before the trees fell.

A lady in her 30s and a gentleman in his 50s were the victims, according to Mohammad Syafiq Noor Azman, spokesman for the Penang fire and rescue office.

He added that the affair likewise caused damage to portions of the adjacent building.

A video of the incident, according to The Star, has gone popular.

The woman was seen in it taking a picture of the palace before heading to the vehicle. After that, it waited for about 40 hours before departing the parking lot as a single-lane gated vehicle entered the complex.

The Star reported that the film also revealed that the trees branches and leaves were shook frequently as a result of the incident’s strong winds.

Authorities extracted the body of the two victims in about three days.

The heavy rains and minimal place at the incident’s location made the rescue more challenging, according to Bernama, Mr. Syafiq’s statement.

On Wednesday, the governor of Penang Island City Council, Rajendran Anthony, made the announcement that 54 trees on the island were in danger of falling in extreme conditions.

The procedure is scheduled to begin the following month and should be finished by mid-October.

Since two days prior, Penang’s main minister, Chow Kon Yeow, reported on Sep 17 that the state has experienced moments of death as a result of tens of fallen branches in over 130 locations.

He had therefore urged drivers to be careful while traveling until the stormy days completely pass.
