US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has arrived in the Philippines, a vital ally of Washington, amid heightened local tensions with China.
Mr Blinken will explain business and will repeat America’s “ironclad” safety commitments to the state, a senior State Department established said.
In recent months, tension has grown between Manila and Beijing due to competing states in the South China Sea.
US authorities say the connection may “inevitably” be part of debate.
In contrast to his father Rodrigo Duterte, who pushed relationships with Beijing, the visit is likely to be seen as strengthening American support for Asian chairman Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
