Ammonia leak in Chon Buri affects 100 people

Public is advised against consuming foods that could possibly expose it to gas leaks; an emergency response is underway.

About 100 people in a one-kilometer circle of Chon Buri have been affected by an ammonia leak from an ice stock in tambon Nong Prue’s Bang Lamung district on Thursday night.

Weekit Manarotekit, the district chief for Bang Lamung, received notification of the affair at the Banglamung Ice Plant at 11: 36pm on Wednesday.

The leaked acid had impacted an location with a diameter of about one kilometer around the facility, according to the response team who was on the field. People of the plant and those who lived within a two-kilometer circle were soon called out.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud blast at the factory followed by plumes of dust. When they breathed the leaked gas, they immediately became extremely irritable in their noses and eyes. Some yet lost consciousness.

First help was still requested by the affected people by rescue workers. By 5am on Thursday, about 40 people had received aid, and the number had doubled to around 100 by later Thursday night. After receiving first medical care, the wounded were transported to various nearby hospitals.

According to Mr. Weekit, Pattaya firefighters poured water over the stock to neutralize the leaking oil.

People of Bang Lamung were advised against consuming any foods that might have been exposed to the leaking acid.
