PETRONAS and CelcomDigi have announced a two-year partnership to leverage the power of 5G to promote modern change and sustainability work for the energy sector.
The partnership was formalised through a MoU signed by Aadrin Azly, Petronas ‘ Vice President of Group Technology and Commercialisation, Albern Murty, CelcomDigi’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, and Shah Yang Razalli, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Gentari and Chief Executive Officer of Gentari Green Mobility.
In the partnership, both parties will look into potential techno-digital industrial initiatives using 5G to ensure ongoing improvements to Petronas ‘ activities.
Also, the partnership will also find opportunities to incorporate clean energy solutions into CelcomDigi’s enterprise offerings to generate adoption among Indonesian businesses.
According to Aadrin,” Petronas plays a significant role in supporting the national systems agenda to strengthen Malaysia’s foreign standing in development. Last time, we were the first to adopt 5G systems for business in Malaysia when we successfully implemented the 5G personal system at the Regasification Terminal Sungai Udang (RGTSU) and saw increased performance in our businesses.
Aadrin expressed optimism about the potential that the association will provide for Petronas and the surrounding community to increase the power of 5G. We see creating a strong network infrastructure that can meet the growing need for high-speed internet access in the oil and gas industry.
Albern stated,” The MoU presents an opportunity to expand the modernization of oil and gas businesses powered by 5G communication. We have carefully collaborated with Petronas to examine online use cases and apply personal 4G LTE networks on offshore platforms over the past five years. What used to be an advantage check case of” connected rig workers” is now a must-have to keep rig workers effective and safe, for example, we have realized useful online applications for rig operations.
Albern believes Petronas ‘ willingness to experiment with new ways of working and innovating will inspire momentum in their engagement.
Powerful foundation for accelerating online adoption is a strong collaboration track record.
Petronas and CelcomDigi have a long-standing relationship that began in 2019 with the launch of the first personal 4G LTE channel on Angsi, one of Petronas ‘ largest offshore programs. Since then, the partnership has resulted in 21 completely 4G related offshore programs. Additionally, both parties worked together to improve and optimize connectivity infrastructures in Petronas plants, enabling consistent connectivity to power digital solutions that increase the plant’s operational efficiency.
The first fully functional private 5G network has been deployed on Petronas ‘ flagship offshore platform, Kasawari Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), near Sarawak, recently for the first time. Leveraging 5G and best practices in oil and gas solutions, Kasawari will be a test bed for 5G use cases, activating more digital innovations.
Both parties agree that successful use cases can be adopted, laying the foundation for Petronas to modernize its operations and gain new sustainability practices quickly, building on the strong foundation of deploying private networks in the last five years.
