Western Japan's Sakurajima volcano erupts, evacuation guidance issued

TOKYO: A volcano on Japan’s western major isle of Kyushu, known as Sakurajima, erupted around 8. 05pm upon Sunday (Jul 24), the Japanese Meteorological Company (JMA) said, but media said there have been no immediate reports of damage.

There were reports of volanic rocks raining down far away of 2 . 5km from the volcano, NHK public television said. The eruption alert level has been elevated to 5, the best, from 3, which includes areas advised to evacuate, NHK said.

Level five requires  evacuation from your danger zone, in accordance to  JMA.

Sakurajima is 4km from  Kagoshima town of  Kyushu isle. It  is one of Japan’s most active volcanoes and breakouts of varying ranges are frequent. In 2019, it spewed ash 5. 5km high.

Video footage from Sunday’s eruption showed exactly what appeared to be a red mass flowing down one side of the volcano, with reddish colored projectiles shooting away while smoke, hard to see in the night, billowed up.

Most of the city of Kagoshima is across the these types of from the volcano yet several residential areas within about 3km of the crater may be ordered to evacuate, NHK said.

Officials at Perfect Minister Fumio Kishida’s office were gathering information about the situation, it added.
