US, South Korea drills give life to Kim’s worst nightmare

SEOUL – Rugged Korean mountainsides erupt in clouds of dust and smoke as high explosives from tanks, artillery and jet plane pound home.

Heavily loaded marines – complete with tanks and armored employees carriers – strike beaches from landing craft under the cover of dense smoke cigarettes screens.

And in a darkened subterranean command bunker, Southern Korean and US troops, attired within camouflage uniforms and flight suits, explore giant digital maps and intel displays.

It is far from war – thankfully.

But these types of stock TV sections showing joint US-Korea military drills display the kind of capabilities that will come into play if the 1950-53 Korean Battle ever bursts back in demonic life.

Exactly this kind of footage was airing upon South Korean plus international TV screens today, as Seoul and Washington kicked off summer military drills. They are the greatest joint exercises kept by the two allies on and around the peninsula since 2018.

It is a move certain to infuriate Northern Korea – albeit, the isolated condition itself has recently been engaged in the most active-ever missile testing spree.   And for months, Pyongyangologists have fretted which the country is set to conduct a nuclear test – potentially its seventh – but have thus far been proven wrong.

The US-South Korea drills, customarily kept in spring plus summer, mark a return to a pre-Donald Trump, pre-Covid status quo .

They were significantly reduce in order to “give diplomacy space to work” as then-US chief executive Trump, enthusiastically backed by previous South Korean president Celestial satellite Jae-in, engaged with North Korean innovator Kim Jong El in 2018-2019.

That unprecedented dalliance ended in failure when Trump wandered away from a 2019 summit: He refused to lift sanctions in return for the taking out of the central Northern Korean nuclear complicated at Yongbyon.

However , even in following years, the drills remained low-key due to Covid-19.

Issues are different in 2022, however. On the community health front, each South Korea as well as the US are “living with Covid. ” On the political front side, with the liberal Moon having ended their term, the conventional Yoon Suk-yeol management came into office promising to bring the exercises back to life.

And it has. At the time of composing, North Korea has not reacted but it customarily rails against these types of exercises, which this considers “invasion preparation. ”

While spokespersons for that Korea-US alliance persist that the drills are usually “defensive in nature, ” some specialists tell Asia Situations that North Korea’s allegations are not entirely without foundation.

Action upon all fronts

“Exercise Ulchi Freedom Shield” – actually a series of workouts, with troops involved in both boots-on-ground plus command-post simulations, whilst civic defense elements also take place– started today (August 22) and will end on September 1 .

They are taking place in the sea, in the air, on a lawn and under this in command bunkers, and are broadly separated into two stages. The first involves repelling North Korean assaults and defending the higher Seoul area. The second is a non-specified “counterattack” phase.

Scenarios include dealing with the particular discovery of explosives at a nuclear energy plant, a fire in a semiconductor fab, a paralyzed banking system, terrorism at airports and drone episodes, Yonhap News Agency documented , citing the South Korean protection ministry.

You will have 13 field teaching programs alongside simulated drills.

While the US Factors Korea website is silent on the drills and the number of property and troops involved, US military newspaper Superstars and Stripes reports additional details. Ulchi Independence Shield will include shared maneuvers, front-line reinforcement, resupply and refueling operations and transportation of simulated weaponry of mass damage.

New advancements seen during the continuous Ukraine War will also be incorporated, the newspapers stated.

US military officials, speaking off the record, possess grumbled for years regarding the lack of large-scale combined drills.

Upon the market officers, who are liberated to speak, told Asian countries Times that on-ground maneuvers are essential each for combat usefulness and for generating up-to-date data to feed computer simulations.

“It is important to coach hard in the environment you are going to fight in, to get a feel for Korea, ” Dorrie Tharpe, a retired US Army lieutenant colonel with 26 years of experience within Korea, told Asian countries Times.

He recalled when two members of the US 82 nd Airborne Division – usually considered the US Army’s elite – were temporarily assigned in order to Tharp’s unit within Korea. “They spoken a lot of trash regarding being airborne, and am said, ‘Shut up to you assault these types of mountains! It is nothing can beat North Carolina! It will take a toll on you, ’” Tharpe recalled.

One of the pair subsequently fell out, along with exhaustion, on a route march.

“Field training is essential due to terrain plus weather, ” agreed Chun In-bum, the retired South Korean general. “You can simulate it however the individual and the unit need to feel it, and their equipment needs to be exposed to it. ”

Field drills also give food to computer drills.

“Having a field training exercise builds the data, ” Chun told Asia Times. “So incorporating field exercising is integral within creating realistic simulations. ”

Why North Korea frets

One concern whenever bringing US property to the peninsula for training is that Pyongyang – which has no liaison officers with Southern Korean or US forces – will believe the ways to be a build-up for a real attack and respond kinetically.

This is the dreaded “war by accident. ” However , that scenario have not eventuated since the Korean War ended, uneasily, in 1953.

Pyongyang also bed rails against the drills since “invasion preparation. ” It has a point.

People charged along with monitoring the exercises in years past told Asian countries Times that they agree – to an education – with North Korea. The drills feature a counter-attack scenario, which could, in reality, carry the fight onto garden soil north of the DMZ.

“The genuine question is, ‘What is the objective? ’ If it is to regain lost territory, which is regaining lost territory, ” Chun said. “There might be instances where you want to take the opportunity to secure some more territory that will make you are feeling safer. ”

But Chun pressured, “A counterattack is really a counter to an strike, it is not an attack. An invasion is exactly what the Russians making the effort to do to Ukraine. ”

But where would a counterattack stop? With the North Korean attacking force being repelled? With a decapitation of the leadership? With a seizure of parts of Northern Korea? Or even a full-scale counter-invasion aimed at reunifying the peninsula?

All such matters are difficult by North Korea’s nuclear capabilities. Yet retired US officers have told Asia Times that at least one scenario calls for an US-led Marine landing in Wonsan These types of. That is a key harbor/resort, with excellent conversation links, that lies just north of the DMZ on the east coast of the peninsula.

“We execute the battle plan and the war plan has a counterattack: I can’t state much more, ” Tharpe said. “But it will have a counterattack plus an end state. ”

The end state is subject, not simply to US, but also to South Korean political decisions. Potentially, any states that joined the combat on the South Korean side under the war-era UN Command may also have a say.

“The North Koreans do their workouts with the end state being sipping drinks in Busan, ” said Tharpe, mentioning the port city on the southern coast of South Korea. “Our end state is to settle the conflict on ‘favorable terms. ’”

What those terms constitute is classified.

Today’s exercises are taking place at a time when the US alliance and US troop presence in Southern Korea are very popular with the public.

According to Seoul think container the Asan Start , citing yearly polls, support from the South Korea-US connections has not fallen beneath 91. 9% since 2012. This year, according to a poll in-may, support for US soldiers in Korea has been 82. 1%.

Even so, there is a section within the South Korean polity that is opposed to the drills – be it from a belief that the exercises irk Pyongyang and imperil cross-border relations; which they represent militarism; or perhaps due to anti-American and pro-North Korean belief.

A modest demonstration took place contrary to the drills over the weekend. But in a country exactly where 100, 000-strong demonstrations are not uncommon, plus where million-strong protests do occasionally happen, the protest, along with 6, 000 guests, generated little coverage.

And while there is one stand protesting the US military existence in Korea away from US Embassy within Seoul today, there was two applauding the Korean-US alliance.
