Thailand passes landmark Bill recognising marriage equality

Bangkok: On Tuesday ( Jun 18 ), the Thai Senate passed the final reading of a marriage equality law, making it the third nation in Asia to recognize same-sex couples after Nepal and Taiwan.

The legislation was approved by almost all members of the upper house, and it will now go to the palace for royal approval. The rules will become effective 120 days after its publication in the royal newspaper.

The innovative policy changes recommendations to “men”, “women”, “husbands” and “wives” in union laws to sex- negative terms.

In addition, it grants same-sex people the same rights as heterosexual types when it comes to implementation and heirship.

The decision, which would produce Thailand the first nation in Southeast Asia to pass marriage equality legislation, was referred to as a “monumental step ahead” by LGBTQ advocates.

Thailand is already known for its lively LGBTQ culture and compassion, making it a favorite destination for tourists.

” This would underscore Thailand’s leadership in the region in promoting human rights and gender equality”, the Civil Society Commission of marriage equality, activists and LGBTI couples said.

After past documents did not pass the legislature, the Bill is the culmination of more than a decade of work by activists and lawmakers.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, who wore a rainbow clothing to honor Pride Month, led a parade through Bangkok’s roads at the beginning of June and was joined by thousands of LGBTQ revellers and protesters.
