Thai former PM hopeful hit with more legal trouble

Pita Limjaroenrat and seven other social figures were given suspended statements by a Thai court on Monday, February 5, for holding an illegal march in 2019.

After the nation’s Constitutional Court ruled that the opposition Move Forward Party had violated the king and national security while attempting to alter a law shielding it from censure, the cases worsen the legal issues the group is currently facing.

Six prominent members of the now-defunct Future Forward Party, the Move Forward’s predecessor, as well as two other activists, were given a four-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and fines of 11, 200 baht ( US$ 313.81 ) by the Pathumwan district court in Bangkok, according to their attorney Krisadang Nutcharus. The accusations were made in connection with a demonstration they organized in the Thai investment in December 2019 that thousands of supporters joined.

According to their attorney, the eight defendants —including parliamentarian Piyabutr Saengkanokkul and business executive Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit—all intend to challenge the judgment.
