Tanjong Pagar, Raffles Place among areas seeing success from ground-up initiatives to enliven precincts

SINGAPORE: Company has been booming for some restaurants in Tanjong Pagar, owing to their own program.

Since it is a pilot Business Improvement District ( BID), the shops, motels, and restaurants in the area have banded together to make the area more attractive.

Members of the program are required to sign up, and charges are collected to pay for ground-up tasks and events. The government will match these fees up to S$ 500, 000 ( US$ 673, 000 ) each year.

Some restaurant reported to CNA that their cashiers have been ringing more as more individuals, including tourists, come to the area for a dinner.

” We’ve really just expanded- we’ve opened a new girlfriend store right across Maxwell place”, said Ms Rich Jacob, operations supervisor at Kafe Utu, which serves American food.

She noted that there has been a 10 to 20 per cent increase in sales on weekends, with even more on weekends. &nbsp,

Residents of the local neighborhood have also benefited from the money being used to beautify popular areas.
