Taiwan girds for weakening Typhoon Krathon, shuts down for second day

Taiwan prepared for the appearance of a weakening Monsoon Krathon, which has already killed two people, as the island closed for a next time with hundreds of flights grounded and economic markets closed.

Krathon is expected to make land at the largest port town in southwest Kaohsiung at midday as a much weaker group 2 typhoon, despite the government’s warning of heavy rains and storm surges along the coastline.

Soon after sunrise, people in Kaohsiung, a town of some 2.7 million people, received word information instructions telling them to seek sanctuary from gusts of more than 160kmh.

A man fell while trimming a tree while another person was hit by a falling stone, according to the fire department, who reported two fatalities as the area experienced heavy rains.

Taiwan’s level western plain is expected to gradually become a tropical depression by later Friday. The typhoon is expected to gradually advance up Taiwan’s level western plain.
