Taiwan general charged in China spying case

TAIPEI: A outdated Taiwanese general plus another senior official were indicted upon Friday (Jun 24) for their involvement within developing a spying network for China, prosecutors said.

Taipei and Beijing have spied upon each other since the finish of the Chinese city war in 1949, when the losing Nationalist side fled towards the island.

The major general, identified simply by his family title Chien, and a retired lieutenant colonel surnamed Wei were billed with violating the particular national security legislation, said the Taipei District Prosecutors Workplace.

They were charged of assisting a Hong Konger surnamed Tse working for a good organisation in south China’s Guangdong province that is linked to Beijing’s Central Military Commission rate, it said within a statement.

Tse had visited Taiwan under the guise of doing business and hired some retired officers by offering free of charge meals and travels, attempting to use them to reach out to those upon active duty.

And others, Chien and Wei tried unsuccessfully to get Chang Che-ping , a top air drive official who was deputy defence minister from July 2019 to June 2021, according to the statement.

“Both defendants have the purpose of endangering national security and making a network for Chinese language military institutions, ” it said.

Chang, currently an organized adviser to Leader Tsai Ing-wen, has been probed last year designed for his suspected cable connections with the case plus was later named as a witness rather than defendant.

Tse stopped travelling to Taiwan after the case found light and is on Taiwan’s wanted listing.
