CNA Explains: The rise and rise of Nvidia

SINGAPORE: In March, artificial intelligence device large Nvidia’s market capitalisation exceeded US$ 2 trillion. &nbsp,

According to reports, it took the business really 180 days to increase its value from US$ 1 trillion, which is less than half the amount of time it took tech titans like Apple and Microsoft.

Over 60 days later, Nvidia’s value climbed above US$ 3 trillion.

And on Jun 18, it became the world’s most valuable organization.

Shortly, however, a days- much sell- of took hold, and it ceded the No 1 position to Microsoft.

However, it’s been a heady, searing trip for Nvidia.

What’s Nvidia’s account?

A simple British meal was where it all started.

In a Denny’s in Silicon Valley, three companions, Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem, met in 1993 to talk about a business plan.

They wanted to create a device that would allow practical, three- dimensional images on individual computers.

The company’s first product was a flop&nbsp, – it was n’t what the market wanted or needed, and Nvidia almost went out of business, according to previous reports.

Nvidia’s following device, however, was “doomed” from the start, even while it was being developed for movie game company Sega.

Another 3D design firms had emerged, and the rest of the world, including Microsoft, was using software that would not help Nvidia’s solution.

Shoichiro Irimajiri, the then-CEO of Sega, made an unexpected choice to let Nvidia discharge its duty while still paying them as per contract terms.

” We had everything we had,” he said. And it gave us just sufficient income to dig down”, Mr Huang, Nvidia’s CEO, has said.

For many years, he would go on to kick off seminars to employees by reciting Nvidia’s illegal tagline:” Our company is thirty time from going out of business”.

Another roadblocks were encountered, such as getting summons for possible anti-trust breaches and becoming the theme of a class action lawsuit.

But Nvidia went public in&nbsp, 1999, entered the S&amp, P 500 share index in 2001, and is far from going statue today.

Unexploded World War II relic removed from Ang Mo Kio construction site

Old World War II ammunition was removed from a construction site in Ang Mo Kio, where the upcoming Teck Ghee MRT place will be constructed, on Friday ( June 28 ). &nbsp,

The battle relic was discovered during construction work along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 and Marymount Road, according to the authorities. &nbsp,

Around 5.45 p.m., they worked with the SAF’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit to ascertain that the product was an old WWII ordnance. &nbsp,

It was determined to be safe to handle, and it has been moved aside to be recycled. No harm was posed to the public”, the authorities said.

CNA has contacted the Ministry of Defense for more details regarding how to get rid of the battle object. &nbsp,

During the course of a 100kg World War II aerial bombing that was discovered at the Myst condo building site, thousands of residents and workers in some of Upper Bukit Timah occupied their homes and offices for hours last September.

The SAF’s bomb disposal group had determined at the time that moving the battle relic was uncomfortable and had carried out a” handled disposal” on the spot.

Experts told CNA last season that it is not surprising to discover old war relics in random areas of Singapore because World War II bombing was “highly inaccurate.”

CNA has even reached out to the Land Transport Authority for more details. Along Phase 1 of the Cross Island Line, there will be an underground place called Teck Ghee MRT station. This stage of the project’s building started in January 2023.

IN FOCUS: What will increase Singapore’s appetite for local produce?

” WE ARE NOT AN AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY”

More fundamentally, some producers pointed out that Singapore lacks the business support they need to realize the” 30 by 30″ perspective.

” We do n’t have the ecosystem. We’re not an agrarian society”, said NUS ‘ Mr Veera, who added that there should be a “moderation of anticipation” around local food production.

Mr. Ang of Natsuki’s Garden and Artisan Green compared the gap between reality and anticipations to” trying to hold a concert before making the step.”

He cited the US Cooperative Extension System as an example as one factor that Singapore lacks, adding that a main body that essentially supports farmers.

The Department of Agriculture oversees the expansion system, which is a system of education resources. Universities engage in agriculture-related analysis and readily share their knowledge with farms as a part of the system.

” They have medical service with very little turnaround times so farmers may handle disease issues quickly,” said Mr. Ang.

In contrast, he claims that the normal time frame in Singapore for identifying a condition in a plant sample is three to five weeks. ” That’s nowhere near what the business would need to perform”, he said.

Mr. Ang, who studied horticulture in Florida, thinks Singapore needs more horticulturalists who are knowledgeable about plant growing methods and are knowledgeable about agrarian systems.

” If you go to the farms in the US or Europe, you will see how ridiculously behind we are in our industry, and people do n’t even realize that,” he said.

Farmers also made it clear that meal resilience is not just about growing the produce; it also includes making sure everything is in order for the produce to increase is.

In that respect, Singapore lacks serve factories and fertiliser producers, they said. Providing access to infant fish or crab and seeds are also important.

Mr McGuinn of Atlas Aquaculture said that food stability requires “everything from start to finish, and there’s none of that” in Singapore.

” Even if we grow 30 per cent ( of nutritional needs ), in a time of need for food security, the same countries that would cut you off – which is the risk – are the ones that have the feed for the fish, the babies”, he said.

This would require investing more money in research for local seed production and development, as well as native breeding and hatchery initiatives for seafood.

Commentary: Happy 100th birthday, Causeway. Here’s to fewer traffic jams

Third, this make it safer for those who choose to move across the borders. &nbsp,

The Malaysian state made the idea of an air-conditioned walkway with travelers in 2020.

Although the concept has gotten stale, perhaps it is time to bring up a suggestion for a steady staircase or pedestrian street from one end to another. It may produce crossing the Causeway the most economical and least carbon-intensive solution.

Most people would take about 20 minutes for a one-way trip because the Causeway is just slightly larger than 1 miles. &nbsp,

More people choosing to move had also lessen the amount of resources required to clear motorcycles, trucks, and cars.

MORE THAN A PHYSICAL Port

These changes, combined, can finally ease congestion at the Causeway, and one day might inspire more travelers to see their journeys with less horror and stress and focus on their intended purpose.

The Causeway will continue to be important to millions in the forthcoming years, whether one is a Malay seeking a better commute to and from work or a Taiwanese switching between their retirement home and visiting family. &nbsp,

The importance of the Causeway really stood out during the COVID- 19 crisis, when edges closed and the tower’s work was restricted. Some Singaporeans and Malaysians were moved by it.

I had to leave my wife for labor in Johor Bahru in August 2021, just days after we got married, and I had no idea when I did see her again. Singapore and Malaysia are separated by 1.05 kilometers by the Causeway, but those times it felt like they were apart of the earth. &nbsp,

Despite its flaws, I’m pleased that the Causeway is still in operation now, bringing together two nations that matter to so many of us. &nbsp,

Indonesia sees changing terror tactics amid rising radicalisation through ‘soft’ approach by masterminds

JAKARTA: Indonesia has seen a rise in the number of people becoming radicalized despite recent evidence of a change in evil methods. &nbsp,

The National Counterterrorism Agency ( BNPT ), which is headed by Commissioner General Mohammed Rycko Amelza Dahniel, announced on Thursday ( Jun 27 ) that these organizations have undergone a paradigm shift in their behavior. &nbsp,

” There is a change of model, a change in their strategy, from hard assault to soft attack. So they want to destroy Indonesia, ( through ) destroying the nation’s young generation”, Mr Rycko said. &nbsp,

He noted that Indonesia had experienced “zero criminal problems” up until June 2024, but he cautioned that this figure might serve to conceal deeper issues and discourage people from being comfortable. &nbsp,

Mr. Rycko, among others, noted three measures that, in his opinion, have increased the actions of the terror cells as well as the rise in Indonesian radicalization. &nbsp,

The head of the cybersecurity firm remarked that there has been a significant rise in the number of terrorist arrests and evidence seizures in comparison to the previous season. &nbsp,

According to state news agency Antara, Mr. Rycko was quoted as saying,” There has been an increase in the seizure of evidence of firearms and sharp weapons.” &nbsp,

He added that there has also been a surge in funding for terrorist cell, including those that are fabricated donations that are being marketed as aid to victims of natural catastrophe. &nbsp,

” The funds ( are collected ) by asking for donations to be deposited in mosques, musollahs ( prayer rooms ), and even placed at traffic intersections. &nbsp,

According to Mr. Rycko,” They put pictures of people with disabilities, disasters occurring, and volcano erupting in pictures,” in order to encourage people to donate their money. The authorities have since caught thousands of these fabricated donation boxes. &nbsp,

In Indonesia, he added that the company has seen a rise in radicalization as a result of a softer approach as opposed to more overt techniques. &nbsp,

According to Mr. Rycko, the change in routine is attributable to the evil masterminds ‘ understanding that the general public has a tendency to reject overt violence. &nbsp,

Studies conducted by the cybersecurity firm since 2016 found that adolescents, children, and people are the main goals of the radicalisation efforts.

” ( This ) makes them a vulnerable group to be radicalised,” Mr Rycko was quoted as saying by CNN Indonesia.

A top official at Indonesia’s Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection said that families and communities must be the first line of defense in response to CNA’s inquiries. &nbsp,

When asked about kids who become victims of radicalization after their families have been radicalized, Mr. Nahar, who is Deputy Minister for Child Protection at the department, said that work should contain, among other things, providing social help to them.

BNPT has increased its work since this year to stop the rising prices of radicalization among the general public. Its studies reveal a surge in prejudice, stemming from a lack of knowledge of violent ideologies. &nbsp,

” This study resulted in the conclusion that there is a lack of education and public awareness, and the ( public’s ) knowledge of the ideology of violence does not exist,” said Mr Rycko.

US, Philippines to hold first ‘cyber-digital policy dialogue’ in July amid rise in cyberattacks

TROJAN HORSES FOR SURPRISE ATTACKS?

However, CNA also asked Mr Uy about new warnings from economists that China may use POGOs as” spartan ponies” for surprise attacks on the Philippines, in case of a conflict.

While he did not confirm the risk, he noted that the government have “busted a lot of scamming cartels” that are operating as POGOs.

” They apply for a legitimate licence and then have their facade operating, or perhaps ( they’re ) actually operating as a POGO… but they occupy a whole building. Some carpets are not intended for gambling activities. They’re doing fraud activities or phishing functions”, Mr Uy added.

He even revealed that among those arrested were” Chinese people” who were “victimising Chinese, Singaporeans” as well as their fellow countrymen.

” I think the government is now seriously looking into how this new place of cyber risks is taking place in this industry, and I think we should ban it or improve our regulatory supervision over this,” said Mr. Uy.

He cited continued disputes regarding the advantages and drawbacks of holding such operations.

” I think our government is also looking at how these may be appropriately addressed”, he added.

Stand ON Twitter

Separately, Mr Uy spoke about his government’s approach on the popular video game TikTok, which is owned by Chinese family business ByteDance.

Manila claims regulation is essential to addressing any spying concerns despite the US’s threat to boycott the social media platform.

According to Mr. Uy, there is no justification for a TikTok restrictions unless there is compelling evidence that the software has been compromised.

” If you’re talking about social media platforms, you’re talking about streaming services or electronic- trading systems. They all use the same design, they gather information, they analyse your information, and then they customise your selections based on those files … and that’s the company model”, he noted.

” So we can, in my opinion, isolate one particular system and state that we want to ban you because you’re using it, but nobody else who’s using the same thing is fine unless there is a strong evidence that the system is compromised,” he said. It is used for malicious functions. &nbsp,

Finally, he continued,” We have to look into that before we decide whether it should be a system that should be restricted.”

Fugitive financier Jho Low, US Justice department reach fresh pact to try and wind down 1MDB forfeiture case

According to some lawmakers, the parties ‘ agreements on June 3 and 4 also include other secret commitments to the US government, which may pursue settlement negotiations with other counterparties, including services in another foreign states, to achieve a world resolution of the scandal that resulted in former prime minister Najib Razak’s jailing.

The scandal-ridden state-owned royal finance 1MDB was the creation of by Najib and Low.

This Settlement Letter Agreement, as we have discussed, “adopts your desire for the United States to handle negotiations with Malaysia, Singapore, Switzerland, France, and other foreign nations that have restraining orders in place for the majority of the assets described below and in the Actions,” according to the file. It also specifies the steps involved in the bankruptcy and move of gross liquidated proceeds to Malaysia and our shared interest in resolving any potential dispute over the assets referenced below in Table 1. &nbsp,

The copy that CNA reviewed had the record of the property removed.

SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT LETTER DIFFERS FROM DOJ’S STATEMENT

Following a distinct US$ 700 million package in October 2019, the DOJ and Low have entered a second asset forfeiture agreement.

In Malaysia, reverberations from the 1MDB scandal continue to permeate the country, and Low continues to be one of its most wanted criminal defendants. &nbsp,

The Settlement Agreement Letter’s detailed terms are fundamentally different from the DOJ’s speech on Wednesday, in which it stated that it had resolved two legal forfeiture cases involving goods that had been acquired using money supposedly extorted from 1MDB.

These cases stem from what US prosecutors claimed was a part of a plot that took various forms between 2009 and 2015 and involved the misappropriation of more than US$ 4.5 billion in 1MDB-related funds. &nbsp,

The DOJ estimated that Low purchased the Warhol and Monet works for about US$ 35 million, and that the surrendered financial deposits and real estate properties were valued at about US$ 67 million. &nbsp,

According to the DOJ, Low is also accused of conspiring to embezzle billions of dollars from 1MDB and of conspiring to defraud various Malaysian and Emirati officials by allegedly paying bribes to them.

He is accused in the District of Columbia of conspiring to conceal and make foreign and proximate campaign contributions during the 2012 US presidential election. &nbsp,

The DOJ added that the most recent settlement “does not release any entity or individual from filed or potential criminal charges”

Deep Dive Podcast: Why is it so hard to get recycling right in Singapore?

Here’s an extract from the radio: &nbsp,

Tan Huileng: &nbsp,
When we visit each other and conduct research or path shows, we realize that two things are very important. One is, people have to interact with the heads and interact with the souls, right? Beyond simply saying,” Recycling is fine and reuse saves the earth,” it also extends to the mind.

I think it’s more ( like )” How can we for sure say that when we put something into the bin, or when we send something for recycling, it really gets recycled”.

Crispina Robert:
So they do n’t trust that it does get recycled?

Huileng:
Yes, that is one. The next one is that sometimes the boxes they visit are so noisy. It appears to be a typical garbage can. And they are like,” Hey… are my things actually being recycled, or is it just going to be thrown away”?

Crispina:
So ( they think ) what’s the point, right?

Huileng:
Simply. We have to actually understand the system. Find other ways to persuade them that recycling also works, perhaps using different types of infrastructure, or using segregated waste recycling, to make them do something a little better. &nbsp,

Crispina:
We did a quick ballot on CNA’s social media channels and received more than 17, 000 vote. Some 64 per cent of you said that, yes we compost because it matters. So the “heart” element is working. I was pretty amazed. But good job, CNA fans.

And those who do n’t discard- two were their major reasons. One, the boxes are always complete. Two … they say it’s currently contaminated so what’s the point? Which is why everyone is thrown into the typical trash can.

In fact, 40 per cent ( of recycled waste ) is contaminated. That sounds a bit, to me. So why is it that Korea, Japan, Taiwan, can nick this contamination problem, but we ca n’t?

Prof Tong Yen Wah:
The fact that their misuse are being sorted by the general public, which prevents them from having a basic recycling bin where everything is mingled with other countries’ is a crucial factor.

In a lot of places where they have inc- mixed disposal, pollution does tend to happen. In Europe, in US, they do this a bit, and they found that it happens. But in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, they have individual disposal boxes. But they do n’t actually have bins. When they actually rid of it, they have to package it independently, and then diverse trucks will come to collect them differently.

CNA Explains: Why is Singapore trying to cut down its pigeon population?

Do n’t other birds pose the same problems?

Singapore is even home to another parrot species- some intrusive- such as mynahs, crows, koels and crazy chickens.

Like pigeons, Javan mynahs- the tiny dark birds with yellowish beaks- can trigger hygiene issues.

In addition to mynahs, inhabitants of the Potong Pasir neighborhood complained about the sounds in 2018. It resulted in the animals being cooped up and killed.

House crows, however, are generally found in cities, cities and industrial settings. Their squawking and accumulated feces can be a nuisance to when they gather and nest close to home areas.

Last year, after several people were attacked by&nbsp, crows in Bishan, the National Parks Board ( NParks ) removed their nests and trapped and culled the birds.

Another animal that’s hard to miss is the Asian koel- probably better known as the “uwu” birds. However, they are regarded as a local species protected by the Wild Animals and Birds Act, in contrast to the rest. &nbsp,

Koels really help to reduce the number of birds by placing their eggs in their homes and then removing their nests. They can also be problematic with their noisy, monotonous, and high-pitched mating calls. &nbsp,

In order to handle the Asian koel populace, NParks has therefore had to eliminate crow nests.
