Johor-Singapore SEZ: Businesses say Malaysia’s ‘stickier’ government boosts their confidence in project, but brain drain remains a risk

Lennon Tan, president of the Singapore Manufacturing Federation, told CNA that he is optimistic that the SEZ wo n’t turn out the same way as the SIJORI Growth Triangle and the Iskandar Malaysia projects because of the intensive business consultation from government officials this time round.

” There is a lot more personal business conversation, business assessment and this is true for both factors of the authorities”, said Mr Tan.

There are “very intentional efforts by high-profile state officials on both sides to support and advance the SEZ initiatives,” he continued.” There is reason to be optimistic that it will succeed,” he continued. &nbsp, &nbsp,

According to Mr. Tan, who is the CEO of the data protection agency Adera Global, some manufacturing companies in Singapore are struggling with rising costs and prices as a result of the scheduling of the SEZ plan. &nbsp,

The SEZ is a new avenue for organizations to shift some of their operations to Johor, maintain attractiveness, and maintain the exact cost structure as it once had because” smaller firms are managing endurance problems with these challenges,” he continued. &nbsp,

” Companies are waiting for more information on the SEZ… but I think they remain really, very strong and extremely interested”, said Mr Tan. &nbsp,

Mr. Jason Su, managing director of the Singapore venture capitalist firm Farquhar, stated to CNA that he is positive that the SEZ may be” powerful” in part because of the support of the national administration led by Mr. Anwar, which he views as a technical pro-business management. &nbsp,

Mr. Anwar has received praise from regional business leaders for creating a conducive environment that encourages foreign investment.

During his tenure as prime minister, multinational corporations ( MNCs ), including Microsoft, Nvidia and Alphabet have all announced partnerships and investments in Malaysia. &nbsp,

US tech giant Microsoft pledged a US$ 2.2 billion investment in artificial intelligence ( AI ) and cloud computing in May to help develop the country’s AI infrastructure.

Additionally, Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang jokingly referred to Mr. Anwar as the” AI Prime Minister” and praised the administration for its “excellent infrastructure” to advance AI development in the region during his trip to meet with Prime Minister Anwar in December 2023. &nbsp,

NParks investigating after corgi dies under the care of pet groomer

SINGAPORE: &nbsp, The National Parks Board ( NParks ) is investigating the case of a dog that died while under the care of a pet groomer. &nbsp,

An unattended corgi was pacing around a grooming table at Pawkins SG, a pet groomer in Serangoon Central, according to closed-circuit television (CCTV ) footage released on social media on Wednesday ( Jul 24 ).

The dog was wearing a collar around its neck that was attached to a cleaning arm to keep it in place. The dog after fell off the table and was hanged for its death by hanging.

The film, which was timestamped, showed a team member entering the room more than 30 minutes after, before discovering the animal’s system.

On the tragedy, NParks told CNA on Thursday that it takes all public comments regarding dog happiness and health seriously.

NParks is looking into the incident where a dog reportedly died at a grooming shop, according to the statement. &nbsp, &nbsp,

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ( SPCA ) weighed in on the death of the dog, calling for” stronger legislation” in animal welfare.

In response to CNA’s questions, &nbsp, Ms Aarthi Sankar, senior director at SPCA, said the animal security team had been&nbsp, notified by a member of the public after coming across the picture.

We have since escalated the situation to the government in response to their actions. She continued,” We know the pet owner has also reported the groom to the appropriate government.”

An similar situation that occurred in 2021 was mentioned by SPCA. TODAY reported in May 2023 that&nbsp, another groomer was fined S$ 8, 000 ( US$ 5, 960 ) and given a disqualification order of nine months after a dog died under her care.

Boon Regine Vienna, who had previously worked as a dog grooming at the Raku Inu pet store along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4, admitted guilt to inflicting unnecessary pain and suffering on the dog.

The light irish, aged 10, was hanged by the chest on a small rope until it died. The dog had been placed on a cleaning stand by Bunn, but unintentionally, it slipped off the edge.

” In Singapore, there are now no regulation or education requirements for animal grooming service services”, Ms Sankar said.

” The Code of Animal Welfare ( for the Pet Industry ) does specify some minimum standards, although failure to comply with them is not considered an offence.

While misbehavior of the password can be used to justify trial or enforcement action, the consequences of the penalties frequently fail to be effective deterrents.

The short disqualification periods also put a strain on service providers ‘ ability to re-enter the pet industry soon after their offence, which poses a threat to animal welfare if these service providers are not properly retrained and rehabilitated.

The SPCA has been constantly lobbying the government on a number of issues to better defend our creatures, according to Ms. Sankar, saying that she believes there is an immediate need for stronger laws in animal welfare.

These include upholding high ethical standards in the pet business.

The SPCA stated that it felt that” there is a need for stronger legislation in animal happiness,” and that it had been constantly lobbying the government on a number of issues to better protect wildlife, such as upholding stringent animal security laws in the pet business. &nbsp, &nbsp,

Meet the sport psychologists and dieticians helping Singapore’s Olympians to deliver under pressure

Dr. Harry Lim, a top sports neurologist from the Singapore Sport Institute, is on the floor in Paris to assess any signs of stress.

” The fact that it even happens once every four ages- everybody’s trying to crest at the right time”, he told CNA.

” So ( we are ) getting our athletes prepared, not just for peaking but also for qualifications”.

Dr. Lim has been conducting ordinary interviews and research to understand their needs and will act as their ears if problems arise.

He continued, the Olympics come with the difficulties of both achieving success at the international games and eligibility.

” How we manage this whole process ( is ) by making sure that athletes are able to peak once to qualify, and then also peak again at the Olympics itself, to be able to produce their best performance”, he said.

BEATING THE Steam

Besides battling their critics, players will also have to argue with July’s summer heat.

This week’s Games is predicted to be the best on record, according to the European standard wind company Meteo-France. Paris has experienced a string of record-breaking temperature waves in recent years.

A statement released last month warned that Paris ‘ problems might be worse than they were at the previous Tokyo Games in 2021.

Team Singapore players can teach in an economic chamber in Singapore to get used to heat changes as part of their conditions procedures.

They can also use ice baths or snow shirts to keep themselves cool while in Paris.

” We can go from pretty cool, like five degrees Fahrenheit, all the way up to 40 degrees Celsius ( in this room )”, said Singapore Sport Institute’s sports scientist Kester Choo.

” We can even change the moisture to resemble Paris’s fairly dry, warm climate.” We can also mimic very warm and humid ( conditions ) like in Tokyo, so that allows us some flexibility in preparing our athletes to compete in different environmental conditions”, Dr Choo added.

Personal data of 128,000 customers of moneylenders stolen after IT vendor hacked

SINGAPORE: The private information of around 128,000 buyers of lenders has been stolen after a third-party IT merchant was hacked.

The Ministry of Law ( MinLaw ) confirmed on Thursday ( Jul 25 ) that the data breach involved the borrower data of 12 authorised moneylenders who are using Ezynetic, a third-party IT vendor, as their contractor.

Ezynetic’s program is not hosted on or linked to the president’s system, said MinLaw, which is the controller of qualified moneylenders.

The government added that Ezynetic’s method was “accessed by a malicious artist” and files containing “personal distinguishable information” was leaked.

In response to CNA’s comment, MinLaw said the compromised information included the titles and NRIC figures of borrowers, as well as payment info.

The information has been published on various websites. According to the government, affected borrowers have been warned to watch out for phishing and other scams that use the jeopardized data.

The 12 usurers are Ban King Credit, Credit 21, Lending Bee, Katong Credit, Credit Thirty3, GS Credit, 1AP Capital, Creditmaster, BST Credit, U Credit, Horison Credit and Credit Matters.

The Personal Data Protection Commission ( PDPC ), the CSA, the CSA, and the CSA have received reports from the moneylenders and Ezynetic.

According to MinLaw, they have started reminding their customers to stay alert for potential hacking scams and have started notifying them of the violation.

CNA has asked the government for more information

Eight different licensed lenders that use Ezynetic’s services  were no affected.

Credit Bureau Singapore ( CBS ) has restricted access to the platform for all 20 licensed moneylenders Ezynetic serves as a containment measure.

The Moneylenders Credit Bureau ( MLCB) platform, a central repository of information on borrowers ‘ loans and repayment records with all licensed moneylenders in Singapore, is operated by Credit Bureau Singapore, the designated credit bureau.

The other 133 licensed money lenders in Singapore are still able to access MLC B’s online services at all times. For more information, customers with queries may contact the particular qualified moneylenders.

The government stated that it is concerned about the information violation.

” The licensed moneylenders have   a duty to safeguard any data in its hands or command. This includes data that is stored on the methods of their third-party vendors.

” MinLaw is working with CSA and PDPC to investigate the situation. MinLaw is also in close contact with the Credit Bureau of Singapore to help with the work of the damaged registered lenders to recover their businesses. “

Seen a tray-return robot at a food court recently? Cleaners tell us why not

One of the F&amp, B stores that stopped using the drones a few years previously claimed that the systems were only used when there was a lack of cleaning. &nbsp,

The director, who did not wish his title or company to be revealed because he was not authorized to speak to the media, claimed that the cost of repairing the robots gradually caused them to charge enough to pay for more cleaning staff.

Workers were still more powerful, he added. Additionally, workers may offer suggestions for faulty crockery and improvement opportunities. &nbsp,

A cleaner at a different restaurant that CNA visited complained that she had to clear the machine whenever a meal spilled food while attempting to put their box on a plate. &nbsp,

” The box return train is more practical and better”, said the clean, who did not want to be identified. &nbsp,” When we had the machine, some customers, like the elder, was never place the basket correctly and dropped them”.

However, the robots were able to transport many trays to washing stations, which was particularly beneficial for older cleaners. &nbsp,

CAN’T REPLACE WORKERS, BUT LIGHTENS Task

Certainly all F&amp, B stores have stopped using these washing computers. &nbsp, Mrs Lee New Mang, who runs Daily Coffee in Chai Chee, said the robot&nbsp, helps open up people from table-clearing jobs. &nbsp,

The restaurant has been using a machine for more than a year to make it easier for customers to gain used dinnerware. It only has two levels for the recipes, making it much smaller than the ones used in coffee stores and food authorities.

The workers activates the robot to take dishes from certain tables. Then it will be returned to a tray-return stop where staff members will remove it once more at the other end of the restaurant. &nbsp,

Mrs. Lee claimed that the robot’s ability to maneuver around hurdles helped it reach its destination. &nbsp, &nbsp,

” It cannot change a employee, but it can help lessen their workload”, said Mrs Lee, 70. &nbsp,

The machine has also been a strike with buyers ‘ children, who love interacting with it, she added. &nbsp,

Tanjong Pagar, Raffles Place among areas seeing success from ground-up initiatives to enliven precincts

SINGAPORE: Company has been booming for some restaurants in Tanjong Pagar, owing to their own program.

Since it is a pilot Business Improvement District ( BID), the shops, motels, and restaurants in the area have banded together to make the area more attractive.

Members of the program are required to sign up, and charges are collected to pay for ground-up tasks and events. The government will match these fees up to S$ 500, 000 ( US$ 673, 000 ) each year.

Some restaurant reported to CNA that their cashiers have been ringing more as more individuals, including tourists, come to the area for a dinner.

” We’ve really just expanded- we’ve opened a new girlfriend store right across Maxwell place”, said Ms Rich Jacob, operations supervisor at Kafe Utu, which serves American food.

She noted that there has been a 10 to 20 per cent increase in sales on weekends, with even more on weekends. &nbsp,

Residents of the local neighborhood have also benefited from the money being used to beautify popular areas.

Income-Allianz deal raises concerns among public, experts; former CEO calls it a ‘breach of good faith’

” Over day, the new individual’s focus may shift from cultural good to benefit maximisation”, said Associate Professor&nbsp, Shinichi Kamiya, a lieutenant director at Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) Insurance Risk and Finance Research Centre.

The proposed merger, however, may also aid Income Insurance in staying competitive and expanding its insurance, they said.

” Contrary to public concerns about higher premiums and reduced admittance to policies, Allianz is likely to sustain Income’s value proposition of providing available, complete, and affordable insurance solutions to retain its dominant position in Singapore”, said Dr Kamiya. &nbsp,

The researchers ‘ comments came after ambassador-at-large Tommy Koh and Mr Tan spoke up formally about Allianz’s plan to acquire a majority interest in Income Insurance.

Last year, Allianz announced that it would give S$ 40.58 per share for 51 per share of stock in Income Insurance. The entire transaction benefit would be S$ 2.2 billion.

The package is pending regulatory approval.

Professor Koh stated on Instagram on Tuesday that income coverage should not be sold.

“( Income Insurance ) started life as a co-operative of NTUC like FairPrice. He said,” The idea was to provide coverage to the people at reasonable costs,” noting that it became a commercial entity a few years ago.

” We are then informed that it may be sold to a European plan company.” I do n’t think it’s a good idea to sell ( Income Insurance ).

It was established to fulfill both a cultural needed and a cultural purpose. They remain true now. I wish to argue that ( Income Insurance ) and FairPrice should never be sold, “he said.

Mr Tan, who is also original party CEO of NTUC Enterprise, referred to a remark by Allianz CEO&nbsp, Oliver Bate, who said that the company is” nervous about things that look great from a volume perspective and not so excellent from a value perspective.”

He said NTUC Income’s values used to be” diametrically opposite”.

We wanted to have as much of a reach as possible for Singaporeans ( the top line ), not just to increase profits but also to increase social impact, he said.

Allianz stated in a press release last week that it intends for Income Insurance to continue participating in national insurance programs and to keep its social commitment to promote social mobility.

Member of Parliament Liang Eng Hwa ( PAP-Bukit Panjang ), chairperson of the&nbsp, Government Parliamentary Committee for Finance and Trade and Industry, told CNA that he has filed a parliamentary question on Allianz’s plan.

He stated that he would inquire about the sale of Income Insurance to a foreign company, and that his main concern is insurance’s affordability and accessibility, particularly for the general public.

Singtel, StarHub to get more time to retire 3G services

According to CNA’s questions, Singtel assistant CEO Anna Yip stated that the technician may take the extra time to allow” a small number of buyers” more time to make the shift.

They include people using outdated portable devices or SIM cards that are unable to connect to the most recent 4G and 5G network, she continued.

Over the past two years, the company has been deliberately assisting customers with migration, according to Ms. Yip.

Singtel took considerable steps to make the changes to the 3G network known to users via social media, roadshows, and print and digital systems, she continued.

Employees at Singtel stores&nbsp, have also been assisting impacted consumers through this shift, “providing more support to the old and susceptible”.

In a statement, a StarHub director said that the extension did manage its impacted customers “ample day” to shift from 3G to 4G/5G sites.

StarHub stated that it regularly communicates with its customers, and that its front teams on their line, website, and physical stores are available to help customers.

” We urge affected customers to improve as soon as possible to prevent service upheaval.” This program also includes our organization customers, who we will be working with to make sure a transition goes smoothly, according to Star Hub.

According to Star Hub, buyers would also need a 4G phone in order to move.

” To accomplish this, we offer different promotions and assistance options”.

The technician pointed out that some older 4G versions may not have this ability, but that the majority of 4G products do so. On Star Hub’s website, you can find a list of 4G phones that fully support emergency calls.

Singapore’s Olympic medal hope Max Maeder makes kitefoiling look easy, but how will a newbie fare?

But that was unlikely to happen if I kept the fly in command, said Talikov.

The key is to have it close to the 12 o’clock position, or almost immediately below, by making small, simple changes with the grip.

It felt like I had to learn how to compromise a bicycle as I gradually grew to grips with the kite. &nbsp,

This is n’t too difficult, I thought. &nbsp,

CHANGES OUT ON THE WATER ARE PERFECT FOR EVERYTHING.

I had to dip into the ocean before it was too late.

There was simply no way for a first-timer to get on a board and ride the waves, so Talikov made the decision to not use a metal table or even a surfboard.

I would instead be able to feel the sail pull me, while wearing a life jacket, helmet, and Talikov near by. &nbsp,

I was soon aware of how it felt to ride a bicycle, but it felt like it was done while you were staring directly at the sun and experiencing salt splashing your eyes, and as if you were waddling and thrashing around in the water.
