5 surprising women’s health facts you might not know: Heart attacks, female cancers, endometriosis and more

The bad news is, you’ll still have to get cervical smear checks.

” Thoracic cancer screening in the form of Pap smears and/or HPV testing is also important because the vaccination does not include all types of HPV that can cause thoracic malignancy”, Dr Huang told CNA Women. ” Also, you may have been exposed to HPV before vaccination. And, finally, the vaccine does not treat existing infections – it only prevents future ones”.

Regardless of whether you’ve had the HPV vaccine, you should get a Pap smear every three years if you’re aged 21 to 29. For women aged between 30 and 65, Dr Huang advised to do it every three years, or a Pap and HPV co-test every five years, or HPV testing alone every five years.

” Screening helps detect abnormal cells early, allowing for early treatment before cancer develops”, she said.

Fact# 4: No, cranberry juice does not cure UTI

Urinary tract infections ( UTIs ) are common in women – one in five females aged 20 to 65 experience it at least once a year. It occurs when there’s a significant amount of bacteria in the urinary tract and, if left untreated, it can spread to the kidneys.

If you’ve been reaching for cranberry juice to cure your UTI, you might want to stop.

” While cranberry juice can’t treat UTIs, some studies suggest cranberry products may help prevent them”, said Dr Huang. &nbsp,

” A substance in cranberries, A-type proanthocyanidins ( PACs ), has anti-adhesion properties that can prevent harmful bacteria ( including E. coli, which is commonly associated with urinary tract infections ) from sticking to the walls of the urinary tract”, she added.

The only cure for UTIs is antibiotics, which have to be prescribed by a doctor. If you have UTI symptoms such as painful urination, urgency or cloudy urine, Dr Huang recommended you see a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Mother, doctor, ex-inmates: Meet some unsung heroes in CNA series Extraordinary People

At the 2012 London Paralympics, serving as Team Singapore’s chief medical officer, she witnessed anything really moving: After a Paralympic diver finished about two rounds behind the others, the crowd gave a standing ovation, cheering louder than for the win.

” That kind of brought grief to my sight”, recalled Teoh.

The practice ignited her love for para-sports, which she described as focused on maximising what persons have rather than what they lack.

Motivated by this philosophy, she started the PlayBuddy program in 2016 to unlock the potential of babies with physical disabilities. It brings together more than 10 children and their families every Saturday to love activities like karate, sports and ball.

Since its founding, more than 50 people have benefitted from the program, which has grown into a friendly group. ” Their entire world may sometimes revolve just around that child, ( with parents ) taking them to school, … medical appointments, therapy”, said Teoh.

” But when they come together like this, families talk to other relatives who may have gone on a similar journey. … They sort of encourage one another, share tales and don’t think so only”.

Singapore studying global moves to keep public service media prominent amid digital shift

SINGAPORE: &nbsp, The Ministry of Digital Development and Information ( MDDI) is&nbsp, studying regulatory moves by other countries to safeguard the “prominence” and “discoverability” of public service media ( PSM) entities.

Speaking in parliament on Friday ( Mar 7 ), Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo said that as consumers shift to platforms like YouTube or Netflix, the reach of&nbsp, broadcast TV is under threat.

” Given the important national part of our PSM companies to inform, educate and join Singaporeans, we must be very concerned about their presence being obscured by the choices of third-party programs”, added Mrs Teo.

” Our PSM information must be visible and easily available to our audiences”.

She added that even as public service advertising institutions expand onto these platforms, the experiences worldwide suggest&nbsp, that placements and algorithms in the modern culture “disadvantage” them.

As such, countries such as the UK and Australia have introduced new laws requiring Related TVs to become pre-loaded with public service advertising programs like BBC youtube, or ABC iview, and to show such software prominently on their user interfaces, said Mrs Teo.

Connected TVs are &nbsp, devices with access to the internet that can stream online videos.

Mrs Teo added that the authorities will consult industry stakeholders, including device manufacturers, before deciding on the next steps.

CNA VS STRAITS TIMES

Earlier in the sitting, Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh referred to Mrs Teo’s remarks from last year’s Budget debate, where she stated that SPH Media had failed to meet its key performance indicator (KPI ) targets for digital reach, youth reach, and vernacular reach in the 2023 financial year, resulting in it not receiving the full committed funding.

Mr Singh asked what “objective criteria” MDDI had set for SPH Media for FY2024/25 regarding the unmet KPIs and whether these targets had been adjusted up or down.

” I had also asked the minister about the way the ministry presented its subsidies to SPH Media Trust in the Budget book, and whether there was a simple way for the public to track and understand the KPIs the ministry had set for SPH Media Trust”, he said.

” This point is important given the size of the subsidy granted to the mainstream media”.

Mr Singh then raised concerns about how public funds are allocated to media outlets and whether audience perceptions are taken into account.

” I would like to share anecdotal feedback from those who follow local English news closely, for example, that Channel NewsAsia’s ( CNA ) reporting and commentary on local issues in terms of depth has overtaken that of the Straits Times”, said Mr Singh.

” Does the ministry conduct local surveys to gauge the public response to local media outlets and if so, how so does it make the decision to deploy taxpayer dollars to those media outlets that rank less satisfactorily in the public eye”?
