
In a move likely to exacerbate the country’s recent political unrest, South Korean opposition parties will file a motion to remove acting President Choi Sang-mok on Friday ( Mar 21 ), according to the majority Democratic Party’s notice to reporters.
Although the vote’s location was not immediately known, the notice stated that the impeachment would be registered at 2 p.m. ( 5 a.m. GMT ).
After President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached over a protracted military laws he declared in December, Choi, who is also the finance secretary, is acting as acting head of the nation.
Choi has angered opposition parties, who collectively control a majority in parliament, by constantly vetoing legislation and putting off appointing a Justice of the Constitutional Court after the legislature unanimously approved it.
Yoon’s prosecution is now being looked into by the court, which will likely decide whether to completely remove him from office or restore him.
As the judge’s decision has waited longer than anticipated, there have been more and more political uprisings between opposing parties in parliament and on the streets as a result of calling for and against Yoon’s impeachment.
