Solomon Islands votes in election watched by China, US for regional security impact

The Solomon Islands started casting ballots in a national election on Wednesday ( April 17 ), the first step since China’s pact with China led to the signing of a security pact in 2022, which brought the Pacific Islands nation closer to Beijing.

The United States, China, and Australia will watch carefully the election results because of how they might affect regional security, but opposition parties said Solomon Islands voters may become focused on deteriorating health care, education, and limited roads.

Sogavare, running as president of the Equity, Unity and Responsibility Party, has pointed to hosting the Pacific Games, with venues donated by China, as a big success.

Election observer teams from Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific, Japan, Europe and the US will track election and calculating.

Outcomes in Malaita, the most populous state, will be carefully watched, a state that has long criticized deepening China relations and is where opposition parties hope to win seats.

The 50 members of the national legislature are chosen for a four-year name. The process that can take several days, which determines the prime minister’s selection after polling day, is based on a vote of newly elected politicians.

The electoral commission urged citizens to keep their votes surprise and refrain from buying tickets, which had been a common practice in earlier votes.
