Singapore’s relations with China not affected after ‘solemn demarches’ over congratulations to Taiwan’s Lai: MFA

SINGAPORE: After China made” solemn demarches” and nbsp, Singapore’s” strong and deep” relations with China have not been impacted, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan on Monday ( Feb 5 ). Singapore for its gratitude on William Lai Ching-te of Taiwan.

Dr. Balakrishnan responded in writing to a parliamentary question from MP Dennis Tan ( WP-Hougang ) about the relationship between the two nations, saying:” Singapore was approached by the Chinese, and we reiterated our longstanding approach and ‘ One China ‘ policy.”

” Our engagements with China have advanced momentum, and our strong and close relationships with her have not been impacted.” “”

Dr. Lai received congratulations from Singapore on January 14 after winning the Democratic Progressive Party’s presidential election in Taiwan.

The” close and longstanding friendship with Taiwan and the Taiwanese people, and will continue to grow this relationship based on our” One China” policy,” according to Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( MFA ).

Singapore has regularly supported the calm growth of cross-strait relationships, according to the MFA director.

Previous Tainan president Dr. Lai is a well-known supporter of Taiwan’s independence. His election, according to his foes and detractors, may jeopardize Taiwan and China’s ability to reach an agreement.  

According to the Xinhua news agency, the vote” will hardly impede the expected pattern of China’s reunification,” according to a statement from the Beijing Taiwan Affairs Office.

Singapore, the United States, Japan, and some European countries that had congratulated Dr. Lai on his triumph were chastised by China.  

China has “immediately made grave demarches to Singapore,” according to Mao Ning, a spokeswoman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

The Taiwan issue is” a deep red line” for China, according to Malaysian leaders, she continued.
