SINGAPORE: The Singapore Democratic Party ( SDP ) said on Thursday ( Feb 20 ) that its secretary-general Chee Soon Juan intends to contest in Bukit Batok Single Member Constituency ( SMC) in the upcoming General Election.
Dr Chee, who has been SDP main since 1993, contested in Bukit Batok SMC in the 2020 General Election.  ,
A party spokesperson said in response to CNA’s inquiries that” the party will continue to concentrate solely on the constituencies it has established a presence in and looks forward to sharing more details about its plans when the EBRC ( Electoral Boundaries Review Committee )  , report is released.”
The upcoming General Election had be held by November 23.
The political limitations for the upcoming election have not been established. The Elections Department ( ELD ) announced on Jan 22 that the EBRC has been formed , to conduct its review.
The committee has been given instructions on how many and how many Group Representation Constituencies ( GRCs ) and SMCs should be created.  ,
In the previous General Election, SDP won two GRCs and three SMCs without capturing any seats in parliament.  ,
Dr Chee had contested against Mr Murali Pillai from the People’s Action Party ( PAP ), but lost with 45.2 per cent of votes.  , This was an increase from the 38.8 per share he got in the 2016 by-election.
The by-election was called after PAP’s David Ong stepped down as , Member of Parliament for Bukit Batok, citing a “personal infraction”. He was said to have engaged in an extramarital relationship with a local advocate.
Dr. Chee shared a video about a fundraising dinner for the group’s Bali Batok battle on his Instagram site on Wednesday.
In the movie, Dr Chee spoke about the latest training program, stating that the Ministry of Education’s content-driven and exam-oriented approach “has never produced a community equipped with skills” to get Singapore ahead.
He claimed that the SDP has made other ideas that include promoting” creative thoughts and important thinking,” reducing school size, and eliminating the Primary School Leaving Examination ( PSLE).
Dr. Chee requested that attendees pick a deadline for the breakfast between Feb. 18 and Feb. 26. It is only available to Singaporeans, he added.
