Due to breaking Japan’s rigid weapons laws, replicas of the swords from the Harry Potter films have been recalled there.
The full-sized versions of Godric Gryffindor’s weapon- which measure 86cm ( 34 feet ) and are affixed to a sturdy show plaque- were sold by Warner Bros. From May 2023 until the late April of this year, Studio Japan LLC was present.
Authorities just revealed to the company that those pieces were strong enough for people to be classified as real swords in November.
More than 350 replicas of Godric Gryffindor’s sword were sold, reports add, with each one going for 30, 000 yen ($ 200, £158 ).
The dagger was sold at Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo: The Doing of Harry Potter, which opened in 2023 in Tokyo. The largest inside Harry Potter destination in the world is billed as the first of its kind in Asia.
Warner Bros. Studios Japan LLC has published a recall notice for the sword on its site, citing “a distribution issue in Japan” and requesting people who bought it to get in contact for “necessary action including logistics and refund”.
The BBC requested post, but the company did not respond right away.
Under Japan’s strict weapons law, carrying knives over 6cm ( 2 inches ) is banned, with violators facing up to two years in prison. If versions of swords are not intended for education or design and cannot be sharpened, they must be registered with regulators.
Japan has extremely low levels of violence, but sometimes there are crimes involving arms.
A 78-year-old gentleman was detained in Yokohama last year after attacking his neighbor with a royal samurai sword in a fight. Following an attack that left three people dying, a ninja sword and another weapons were discovered in a Tokyo monument in 2017.
