Raft of marinas eyed for new hub

The Sea Department has revealed a plan to build marinas in six provinces along the Andaman coastline and turn them in to a new hub pertaining to tourism and ocean transport.

The provinces which will feature in a feasibility study to be performed from next year till 2024 are Ranong, Phangnga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun, said Sompong Jirasirilert, deputy director-general from the department.

He said once the details of the expense plan become better, it will attract private investors and local administrative organisations in order to jointly invest in the scheme with the government.

Each marina will be designed to take on average thirty to 40 small cruise ships, and at most 100.

The expected expense value will be approximated later when the exact locations for developing these marinas are decided, Mr Sompong said, adding their respective sizes depends on the chosen venues.

The particular six marinas will be designed after that procedure is complete, and an environmental impact assessment will be conducted, he said.

“The Pathiu district port is anticipated to wrap up later this season and the other port later next year, ” he said.

“The building of a new interface is also being prepared next year on Trat’s Koh Kut Island.
