Pelosi vows support to denuclearise North Korea, plans to visit Korea border

SEOUL: ALL OF US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her Southern Korean counterpart vowed on Thursday (Aug 4) to support attempts to maintain a strong prevention against North Korea and achieve its denuclearisation.

A joint statement was issued right after Pelosi met South Korea’s National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo in Seoul, by which they expressed worries over the North’s growing nuclear and missile threats.

“Both sides expressed concerns about the dire scenario of North Korea’s growing threat, ” the statement stated.

“We decided to support the efforts of the two government authorities to achieve practical denuclearisation and peace by means of international cooperation and diplomatic dialogue, based on the strong and extended deterrence against the Northern. ”

Pelosi also said in a news conference that she and Kim discussed ways to enhance cooperation on local security and economic and climate issues.

Pelosi arrived in South Korea late on Wednesday, following a short stop in Taiwan , and met ALL OF US embassy officials in Seoul earlier on Thursday night before talks along with Kim and other congress.

Later on Thursday night, Pelosi plans to see the Joint Protection Area near the seriously fortified inter-Korean edge, patrolled together simply by American-led UN Command word and North Korea, a South Korean official said.

She would be the highest-level US official to check out the area after former president Donald Trump, who met North Korean leader Betty Jong Un right now there in 2019.
