JAKARTA: Hundreds of people were evacuated and recovery efforts were ongoing after flash storms hit near Lake Toba in Indonesia’s North Sumatra province, killing one person and leaving 11 others missing.
The area on the lake’s shores was hit by heavy rain and flash floods on Friday ( Dec 1 ) evening, causing damage to dozens of homes as well as a church, school, and hotel, the BNPB said in an announcement late on Saturday.
Locals and foreign tourists frequently travel to Lake Toba, the largest volcanic lakes in the world.
Images from the company showed how the display floods dragged huge stones, trees, and clay down hillsides, leaving some houses completely buried.
According to the company, about 200 people had been evacuated, while about 350 people were conducting search and rescue operations using heavy products.
