NSmen ‘free to decide’ how to use their S$100 NS55 digital credits: MINDEF

SINGAPORE: Nationwide servicemen (NSmen) are usually free to decide how they want to use their S$100 of  NS55 digital credit , said the particular Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) on Sunday (Jul 9).

The particular ministry was responding to CNA’s queries following a TikTok video proceeded to go viral earlier this week, demonstrating how the credit can be exchanged to get cash  using the PayNow option at Sheng Siong’s simple teller machines.

The digital credits are usually part of the NS55 Recognition Package that is meant to thank past and present NSmen for his or her contributions to Singapore’s defence and safety, as Singapore marks 55 years of National Service.

They will be disbursed to entitled NSmen throughout Come july 1st.

The particular NS55 credits are usually recognised at retailers that accept PayNow UEN QR or even NETS QR, including supermarkets, retail plus F& B shops, as well as hawkers plus online merchants, stated a MINDEF spokesperson on Saturday.

“This arrangement provides our nationwide servicemen with flexibility and potential added benefits in the use of their own NS55 credits. It also supports our businesses.

“National servicemen are free to determine how they would like to make use of the credits. Those who intend to encash them with merchants with this kind of functions may wish to consider whether they might incur extra fees. ”

Sheng Siong’s simple teller devices, for instance, charge the S$0. 20 assistance fee for each PayNow transaction.

Some merchants may offer additional discounts once the NS55 digital credit are used, said the particular MINDEF spokesperson on Saturday.

NSmen can also decide on the credits in making payments to govt agencies and educational institutions or donate their particular credits to charities online,   so long as these organisations take payment via PayNow UEN QR or even NETS QR, the spokesperson added.

Unlike other NATURSEKT credits given out earlier, the NS55 digital credits cannot be withdrawn from SoCash.

Instead, NSmen will need to access their LifeSG mobile app to redeem the particular digital credits.
