NParks investigating after corgi dies under the care of pet groomer

SINGAPORE: &nbsp, The National Parks Board ( NParks ) is investigating the case of a dog that died while under the care of a pet groomer. &nbsp,

An unattended corgi was pacing around a grooming table at Pawkins SG, a pet groomer in Serangoon Central, according to closed-circuit television (CCTV ) footage released on social media on Wednesday ( Jul 24 ).

The dog was wearing a collar around its neck that was attached to a cleaning arm to keep it in place. The dog after fell off the table and was hanged for its death by hanging.

The film, which was timestamped, showed a team member entering the room more than 30 minutes after, before discovering the animal’s system.

On the tragedy, NParks told CNA on Thursday that it takes all public comments regarding dog happiness and health seriously.

NParks is looking into the incident where a dog reportedly died at a grooming shop, according to the statement. &nbsp, &nbsp,

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ( SPCA ) weighed in on the death of the dog, calling for” stronger legislation” in animal welfare.

In response to CNA’s questions, &nbsp, Ms Aarthi Sankar, senior director at SPCA, said the animal security team had been&nbsp, notified by a member of the public after coming across the picture.

We have since escalated the situation to the government in response to their actions. She continued,” We know the pet owner has also reported the groom to the appropriate government.”

An similar situation that occurred in 2021 was mentioned by SPCA. TODAY reported in May 2023 that&nbsp, another groomer was fined S$ 8, 000 ( US$ 5, 960 ) and given a disqualification order of nine months after a dog died under her care.

Boon Regine Vienna, who had previously worked as a dog grooming at the Raku Inu pet store along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4, admitted guilt to inflicting unnecessary pain and suffering on the dog.

The light irish, aged 10, was hanged by the chest on a small rope until it died. The dog had been placed on a cleaning stand by Bunn, but unintentionally, it slipped off the edge.

” In Singapore, there are now no regulation or education requirements for animal grooming service services”, Ms Sankar said.

” The Code of Animal Welfare ( for the Pet Industry ) does specify some minimum standards, although failure to comply with them is not considered an offence.

While misbehavior of the password can be used to justify trial or enforcement action, the consequences of the penalties frequently fail to be effective deterrents.

The short disqualification periods also put a strain on service providers ‘ ability to re-enter the pet industry soon after their offence, which poses a threat to animal welfare if these service providers are not properly retrained and rehabilitated.

The SPCA has been constantly lobbying the government on a number of issues to better defend our creatures, according to Ms. Sankar, saying that she believes there is an immediate need for stronger laws in animal welfare.

These include upholding high ethical standards in the pet business.

The SPCA stated that it felt that” there is a need for stronger legislation in animal happiness,” and that it had been constantly lobbying the government on a number of issues to better protect wildlife, such as upholding stringent animal security laws in the pet business. &nbsp, &nbsp,
