Nepal battles raging wildfires across the country amid heatwave

Emergency personnel battled the blaze that raged through a wooded area of Lalitpur, on the southern edge of the Kathmandu valley, through the night.

More than 4,500 fire have been reported across the nation this year, almost twice as many as they did last year, but less than the worst fire period on record in 2021, according to government data.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority’s Sundar Prasad Sharma told AFP,” The year is expected to last for a fortnight more. The increase has exceeded expectations.”

” It is challenging to put out fires because of our hard terrain”, he added.

Badri Raj Dhungana, a spokeswoman for the environment ministry, claimed the increase in wildfires this year was caused by a protracted drought and severe weather in Nepal’s southwestern plains.

” Usually, fire top soon April but this year they are also increasing because of rising heat”, he said.
