Myanmar executions a ‘grave setback’ for ASEAN efforts to facilitate peace: Vivian Balakrishnan

Dr Balakrishnan’s remarks came after  ASEAN issued a strong declaration calling the accomplishments “highly reprehensible”.

“The execution of the death phrases just a week before the 55th ASEAN ministerial meeting is highly reprehensible, ” said Cambodia, this year’s ASEAN chair, adding that this execution showed the junta’s “gross lack of will” to support the bloc’s efforts in order to facilitate dialogue between your military and its competitors.

Malaysia’s International Minister Saifuddin Abdullah also condemned the  executions, describing the action as  a crime against humanity.

He added that  Myanmar really should not be allowed to send politics representatives to any worldwide ministerial-level meetings.

“We looked at (the executions) as if the particular junta is making a mockery of the five-point general opinion ,   and i believe we really have to understand this very, very significantly, ” Mr Saifuddin told a news conference.

A  spokesman for the Myanmar military said that the men “were given the suitable to defend themselves according to court procedure”   and insisted that those executed were not democracy activists, but killers deserving of their particular punishment.

“If we compare their sentence with other demise penalty cases, they have got committed crimes that they should have been given death sentences often, ” said Zaw Min Tun.

It was unclear how the executions were carried out and when they happened. Family members of the condemned prisoners said upon Monday that they was not informed of the accomplishments beforehand, and had not really been allowed to retrieve the bodies.
