Less leg space, complicated wiring among considerations of putting ERP 2.0 unit on driver's side, mechanics say

Depending on the car’s make, installing the ERP 2.0 card readers on the vehicle’s area might present challenges like limited leg room and trouble extending electrical wires.

This is what mechanics and an engineering expert that CNA spoke to said of the Land Transport Authority’s ( LTA ) announcement last week, which made clear that car owners can choose&nbsp, to install the unit at the driver’s or passenger’s side. &nbsp,

Installation of the devices, for Singapore’s fresh Electronic Road Pricing technique known as ERP 2.0, started next November. The card visitors, also known as the control models, have been installed in more than 18, 000 vehicles thus far.

Individuals use the system to pay for ERP or parking fees, such as the NETS FlashPay cards, NETS Motoring Card, and EZ-Link Motoring Card.

When the assembly workout started, the entrance passenger’s footwell was recommended as the default location for the cards readers. But this led to complaints&nbsp, that individuals found it difficult to replace or add their cards.

On Mar 28, LTA said drivers&nbsp, can choose where to place the system, without specifying choices, subject to technical practicality. In its April statement, it made it clear that the choice was the vehicle’s footwell.

A mechanic claimed it was a” good move” to allow car owners to discuss the card reader’s placement with their factory. &nbsp,

He expects that most of the customers at his studio, located at business building Synergy@Kaki Bukit, &nbsp, will want the product to be installed on the vehicle’s area for easy accessibility. &nbsp,

He said:” Now that drivers know they can place their processing unit on the passenger or the driver’s side, why would they put their unit on the passenger’s side”?

At the Synergy@Kaki Bukit vehicle sessions, CNA spoke with him along with three other mechanics. &nbsp,

They attended workshops that LTA licensed to install the new ERP system’s on-board unit ( OBU). All of the individuals who spoke to CNA provided the following information:

MANY Criteria

While customers might want to have the card readers on the driver’s side, another mechanic said installing it it has its challenges. &nbsp,

For one, not all vehicles have an electric power unit on the driver’s side, which the card user must connect to. &nbsp,

For some vehicles, the electronic control device is on the passenger’s side. The locksmith would have to place the card user on the driver’s side because of this. &nbsp,

He said,” We have to install the wire so that it runs through the middle of the car, and we have to take out the control panels.” &nbsp,

Other factors, such as the” curves” at the footwell area, are also taken into account. The cards reader there might be difficult to fix and possibly fall off if the car has too many shapes. &nbsp,

He claimed that several mechanics have experienced this problem where the card reader stops working or falls off due to improper installation. &nbsp,
