Lawyers for South Korea’s Yoon to attend impeachment trial, adviser says

A Yoon-related adviser said that the legal representatives of South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol will be present at the first Constitutional Court hearing on Friday ( Dec 27 ) in a trial looking into his impeachment by the parliament over his brief but valiant implementation of martial law.

Yoon had until Thursday defied pleas from the court to send files as well as summons from researchers in a separate criminal case over his declaration of martial law on December 3, drawing criticism from also members of his group.

According to a message sent to reporters from Yoon’s legal team, two lawyers, one of whom is a past attorney and the other a former Constitutional Court official, are scheduled to appear at the court hearing. The two could not be reached for comment right away.

Unsettling crucial allies the United States and Europe, which had seen Yoon as a steadfast partner in global efforts to combat China, Russia, and North Korea, were the sudden martial law order and swift political consequences that shocked the country and economic areas.
