Intergenerational co-living: A new housing option for seniors in Singapore?

The NUS scholar, Ms Chia, made the point that schemes for seniors may also include activities that showcase their abilities and lived experience.

Why ca n’t we let our seniors teach us their homemade recipes instead of teaching them to do art or cook? &nbsp,

” In Singapore, I think we tend to consider of elderly as participants who need assistance. She further suggested that we should adopt a perspective where seniors have a role to play and are respected group members.

” This will help our elders to time with dignity.”

Supporting ACROSS GENERATIONS

The site, which is adjacent to the original Henderson Secondary School, a state property that has been converted into a space housing an urban farm, a childcare facility, a nursing home, a dialysis center, and a farm, is where the 98 Henderson Road tender is located.

According to Ms Chia from Ageing Asia, this opens up opportunities for collaboration between the new co-living service and the existing area, such as regular appointments from younger students from the babysitting center or even part-time employment at the industrial farm.

” At the end of the day, it’s about how a top who lives it can have more entry to a more interesting, healthier life with more sociable interactions.”

NUS ‘ Ms Chia noted an increasing trend towards&nbsp, generational co-housing.

People are beginning to realize that elderly and the young can learn from one another and provide support for one another, she said. It also makes for a little lighter environment.

For example, Taipei’s Yang-Ming Senior Apartments rents out rooms to both elderly and college kids. She said that students are being made to encourage them to organize activities and communicate with their older neighbors by paying lower lease.

A two-storey shophouse along Joo Chiat Road has been home to an assisted living facility with an familial bend in Singapore for more than a year.

The Joo Chiat Social Club, as it’s called, is now home to eight elders aged 67 to 92. &nbsp,
