Hwa Chong staff member reprimanded for making discriminatory claims about LGBTQ community in school presentation

SINGAPORE:   Hwa Chong Institution (HCI) provides reprimanded a staff associate who made  discriminatory claims against the LGBTQ community during a display on sexuality.  

He has also been  hanging from delivering additional sexuality education classes.  

“We are aware of the event which took place throughout a presentation on libido where a staff member incorporated content outside the range of MOE’s Sexuality Education curriculum straight into his slides, ” the school said  upon Monday (Jul 18) in  response to CNA’s queries.

“The views presented were the individual staff’s individual perspectives and not associated with the position of the school or MOE (Ministry of Education). ”

Photos of a presentation slide were uploaded on social networking platform Reddit upon Saturday, garnering over 700 comments this past weekend.  

The slide, titled “Community Health”,   contained claims that “58 per cent of homosexuals have problems with intestinal worms” and that “one within 15 homosexuals is really a paedophile”.  

The HCI spokesperson said the school takes  a serious view of the incident and associates have met along with students to address their concerns.

“To ensure that such occurrences are not repeated, we are going to also review our own processes, ” the spokesperson added.

“The staff provides since been reprimanded for delivering content material without the school’s acceptance and suspended from delivering further libido education lessons. ”
