PETALING JAYA: No MIC leaders were seen at the Barisan Nasional candidates announcement event, where most coalition party leaders are in attendance.
MIC president Tan Sri SA Vigneswaran, when contacted, said he would not be attending the event.
“Not me. Have other engagements. Thank you,” he said on Tuesday (Nov 1).
It is learnt that the MIC central working committee (CWC) will hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday (Nov 2) morning to discuss the party’s future.
This comes after a source close to the party confirmed that they would not be attending the announcement of Barisan candidates for GE15 at the World Trade Centre In Kuala Lumpur by coalition chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on Tuesday (Nov 1) night.
“The turn of events is said to be linked to certain ‘disagreements’ between the top leadership on the future of the coalition if it wins the elections,” said the source.
It is believed that only three MIC leaders may be named as GE15 candidates instead of the 12 seats requested by the party.
MIC cannot contest in the elections as a party because it can only run under Barisan.
If rumours that a rift has developed within the Barisan leadership are true, there is speculation MIC may consider leaving the coalition.
