Foreign actors to get tax exemptions

Foreign stars shooting on place in Thailand is going to be granted a tax exemption, as a part of the government’s bid to get more foreign filmmakers in order to shoot in the country.

Culture Minister Ittiphol Kunplome mentioned the measure, that is aimed at increasing govt revenues from international film productions, is going to be in place until 2027.

Considering that a similar scheme, in position from 2011 to 2015, successfully fascinated many major manufacturing companies, the Nationwide Film and Movie Committee decided to take it back to help revitalise the economy, Mister Itthipol said.

The move was finalised following the committee studied a report prepared by the Division of Tourism under the Ministry of Travel and leisure and Sports, this individual said.

The exemption, which was first proposed in December last year, was given the green light by the cabinet in June this year, the minister explained.

Income from foreign film productions has steadily risen over the past 10 years, even during the pandemic. A year ago, for example , the government earned a little over 5 billion baht from such productions.

The tax exemption comes on the back of the government’s efforts to promote Thailand’s soft power through lifestyle and arts around the international stage.

The government can also be pushing locations in lesser-known provinces to tourists and film companies in a bet to attract more visitors after pandemic restrictions were eased.
