Five young scientists represent Malaysia at the 72nd Nobel Laureate meetings

Five young scientists will represent Malaysia in the 72nd Nobel Laureate Meetings in Lindau, Germany, from 25 to 30 June 2023. They are among 635 selected young scientists globally who will interact with about 40 Nobel Laureates in a meeting dedicated to Physiology and Medicine.

The five scientists are Dr Liyana Azmi, 34 (Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia), Dr Norhasmira Mohammad, 33 (Universiti Teknologi MARA), Dr Wong Yin How, 35 (Taylors University), Dr Afifah Mohamed, 33 and Dr Wong Sok Kuan, 34 (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia). 

Since 2004, Malaysia has sent 84 young scientists, including this year’s participants, to participate in the Nobel Laureate Meetings. This is done Through the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM).

“MOSTI emphasises the need to provide opportunities for young Malaysian scientists to participate in globally recognised programs, such as the Nobel Laureate Meetings,” said MOSTI Minister Chang Lih Kang.”Malaysia’s participation in the Nobel Laureate Meetings is one of ASM’s efforts through international collaboration to empower young scientists by providing them with opportunities to collaborate with leading scientists worldwide,” said Tengku Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen, the president of ASM who also serves as the Science, Technology and Innovation Advisor to the Prime Minister.

ASM opened the 72nd Nobel Laureate Meetings nominations to all young scientists nationwide from public and private universities from 21 September to 7 October 2022. 

An initial screening was conducted by ASM, with the final selection made by the Nobel Laureate Meetings committee. Nominations for this programme are open annually based on the designated field of science.

The 40 Nobel Prize laureates participating in this programme will present their research and share their experiences with all the attending young scientists. The attendees will also participate in lectures and open discussions and casually meet the Nobel Prize laureates during the ‘Laureate Lunch’.
