Drunk taxi driver kills policeman at charity event in Bangkok

A police officer overseeing a charity-running event in Bang Khen city was struck by a seriously intoxicated cab driver early on Sunday morning. The official later died at doctor.

Pol Sub Lt Assada Chamniansri, 54, a deputy traffic inspector from Bang Khen police station, was directing traffic on Phahol Yothin Road, outside the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority ( BMTA ) depot, at about 6am when he was hit by a green- yellow taxi with licence plate 1 Mor Kor 67 Bangkok.

He was found by first responders in critical situation and taken to Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital, where he succumbed to his injury days later.

The car driver was identified as Warabut Somsawang, 45. His blood alcohol level was 287 milligrams, which is far above the legal limit of 50 milligrams, according to reports that Warawut admitted to drinking at a friend’s home in the Huay Kwang city before driving home, claiming he was n’t intoxicated. He claimed he was unable to handle the vehicle when he attempted to turn his car after seeing Pol Sub Lt Assada in the middle of the road.

He was accused of driving while under the influence of alcohol and recklessly driving, which led to his death, by the authorities. The dangerous accident took place during a small-run by Phranakhon Rajabhat University.
