Commentary: What more can be done to prevent sexual abuse of children, especially by those closest to them?

A PUBLIC SEX OFFENDER REGISTRY: WHAT ABOUT IT?

Second, even after serving their prison sentences, should sex offenders be permitted to return to settings with prone minors?

The second offender in the two cases mentioned at the beginning of this essay was a crime who had been identified. The second, who had previously raped his daughter and her friends, eventually moved in with his granddaughters, two young girls who would also experience his abuse.

I’m glad the government is thinking about changing the law to permit the detention of dangerous offenders for as long as is required for public safety, but I do n’t envy the experts and those in positions of authority who would have to make such difficult decisions.

There have also been proposals for common sex offender records. This is a public register that keeps track of the names of convicted sex offenders.

It is crucial to remember that not all criminals run the risk of re-offending, and we must weigh justice—the offender would have served their sentence in prison—versus people protection.

In the US, the only nation with a public registry of registered sex offenders, 44 % of surveyed family members reported being threatened and harassed, and 7 % were assault targets.

In light of such terrible crimes, it is only natural to want to punish the offender with a larger act text or thicker rotan. However, it is obvious that after-the-fact penalties are insufficient as a disincentive. Given that so many abusers are under 50, perhaps raising the maximum age for caning may not be sufficient.

Prevention and quicker monitoring must be the main goals of our treatments. If that does n’t work, government agencies ‘ numerous channels of protection will resemble post-abuse support. We would be bandaging the gaping wound left by a lifetime’s worth of mental trauma.

There is no murder more abhorrent than one committed against a child. And the child who ought to be guarding that baby is the most responsible. While legal changes are crucial, prompt behavior by bystander family members and friends is crucial. Because of the possible repercussions on the family unit, that will require courage, but it is a courage we may fail to display.
