Commentary: The CMIO model is still useful for favoured policy outcomes, but it shouldn’t define our identities

Residents WANT WHAT, WHAT?

In the latest 2024 Institute of Policy Studies ( IPS) survey on Race, Religion, and Language that polled 4, 000 Singaporean residents, when asked whether to keep, remove or change the CMIO framework, as many as one in five respondents ( 22 per cent ) chose the” not sure” option.

Maybe a significant portion of the populace has not given this subject many believe or has accepted that it is extremely complicated. &nbsp,

Among those with an opinion on the CMIO framework, 7.7 per cent wanted it removed ( compared with 12 per cent in 2018 ). &nbsp,

However, nearly six in 10 ( 58.1 per cent ) want the framework to stay, up from 46.2 per cent in 2018. This contrasts favorably with a CNA-IPS poll conducted in 2022, in which 63 % of the 2, 000 people surveyed believed that the CMIO framework was effective in preserving racial harmony.

Additionally, a significant portion of respondents ( 32.1 per cent ) want the CMIO framework to be expanded to be more inclusive. &nbsp,

The CMIO model may be modified or completely removed, but the 2024 study indicates that the majority also desires the framework’s policy outcomes. More than eight in ten respondents concur that it is crucial for immigration plan to keep the racial makeup of the people. It is important to know how many people of each competition live in Singapore, according to the majority of the respondents. &nbsp,

A more 84.8 percent of lawmakers concurred that it is crucial to have a proportionate representation of minorities in congress. Without some sort of platform that categorizes the people based on cultural history, such as the nine in ten who support ensuring a racial mixture in the neighborhood, any outcome would not be possible.

Indeed, K Shanmugam, the minister of law and home affairs, had earlier stated in parliament on February 5 that” the CMIO ( framework ) is a key plank of those policies” and that it “has contributed to forging the harmonious set of racial relations in our society today.”

At the IPS 35th Anniversary Conference in 2023, Mr. Shanmugam also noted that maintaining the CMIO woman’s dimensions was of particular importance to the Asian area because it gives the guarantee that” they are not going to be overtaken.” &nbsp,

Such procedures may have unintended effects, but their wider purpose seems to be the foundation for benefits that Singaporeans want and value. &nbsp,
