Commentary: Israel-Hamas conflict is a reminder that Singapore cannot take its eye off the ball

Website misinformation and disinformation have emerged as a serious threat to public purchase in today’s social media-dominated world. Now, fake videos that purport to depict the Israel-Hamas conflict are spreading, igniting emotions, and further polarizing societies.

With these risks in mind, there has been a development of policy in Singapore in recent years. These include the Online Criminal Harms Act, the Foreign Interference ( Countermeasures ), and the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act. & nbsp,

Of course, there is a chance that efforts to combat disinformation will result in the destruction of genuine viewpoints. In order to prevent conflicts from building up and boiling over in dangerous ways, there should be stations to show views in a responsible and productive manner.

But peace and harmony cannot be guaranteed by legislation only. It is still the responsibility of the general public, particularly area and religious leaders, to uphold societal norms and elevate public discussion.

Given human nature, issues, whether between governments or within societies, may be unavoidable, but we have the power and obligation to stop them from occurring in this situation.
