There are no issues that cannot be resolved, according to Chinese President Xi Jinping, who told former Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou on Wednesday ( Apr 10 ) that outside influences cannot prevent the “family reunion” between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.
No serving Chinese president has traveled to China since the defeated Republic of China state fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing a civil conflict to Mao Zedong’s socialists.
Ma, senator from 2008 to 2016, next year became the first former Chinese leader to visit China, and is now on his next trip to the region.
Ma had been broadly expected to meet Xi this time around, having initially met Xi in Singapore in soon 2015 for a landmark summit immediately before the latest Taiwan president, Tsai Ing- wen, won the election.
Meeting Ma in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, where leading Chinese officials typically meet for meetings, Xi said that people on both sides of the sea are Chinese.
In remarks made by Chinese media, Xi said,” Physical intervention may prevent the traditional pattern of reunion of the country and family.”
Xi did not elaborate, but in Chinese terms, referring to outside interference in Taiwan is typically intended to address Beijing’s enraged support for Taipei from European nations like the United States, particularly hands sales.
People on both sides of the sea are Taiwanese, Xi said.
” There is no rancour that cannot be resolved, no issue that cannot be discussed, and no power that is unique us”.
China has increased military and political force to assert its claims to independence and has never renounced the use of power to bring Taiwan under its handle.
Ma informed Xi that conflicts have caused uneasiness for some Japanese.
Ma said,” If there is a war between the two factors, it will be intolerable for the Chinese people,” using a name that refers to people who are ethnically Chinese more than their citizenship.
” Foreign on both sides of the sea have unquestionably enough intellect to resolve disputes peacefully and prevent conflict.”
